Know before you go

Things you need to know before visiting the park:

  • You can't bring food like chips or peanuts inside. Park rangers will check your backpack at the entrance and remove them.

  • There are bathrooms, showers, and changing stations.

  • They only allow a certain number of people into the park each day, so if you leave and want to return later, you can re-enter only if there is enough space.

  • Do not feed the animals.

  • Do not walk off the trails.

  • If you drive, park at the lot by the roundabout; it's free. The parking lot by the entrance charges 3,000 Colones (CRC).

  • If you hire a guide, make sure they are certified by the ICT (Instituto Costarricense de Turismo). Some guides pretend to be certified and try to charge a lot of money. You can also book through a tour company, as they have certified guides.

  • For guides outside the entrance, always bargain. They offered $40 for a 3-hour guide for 1 person.

  • Transport is available if you need it.

  • Cancellations must be made with 48 hours' notice by phone.

  • No-shows will be charged the full price.
