The itinerary

1
Day 01

Moshi to Marangu Gate and Mandara Hut

  • After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate from Amekit Safari Lodge and complete registration at the gate.

  • Afterwards, begin trekking through the rainforest to Mandara Hut. Here, you will have an acclimatisation opportunity with a visit to Maundi Crater.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mandara Hut.

2
Day 02

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut through Moorland

  • After breakfast, you will leave the rainforest behind and continue trekking to Horombo Hut. From here, you will pass through rolling moorlands and get your first clear view of the towering Mount Kilimanjaro.

3
Day 03

Horombo Hut Acclimatisation Day

  • Spend an extra day here at Horombo during this 6-day itinerary for acclimatisation purposes.

  • On this day, you will hike to Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rock to help your body adjust to the higher altitude.

  • After this session, return to Horombo Hut for lunch, rest until dinner, and stay overnight.

4
Day 04

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut via Kibo Saddle

  • After a good night's rest and breakfast, you will trek past the last water point to reach Kibo Saddle, a great desert between the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo.

Enjoy an early dinner and overnight stay at Kibo Hut.

5
Day 05

Midnight Summit Ascent to Uhuru Peak and Descent

  • Wake at midnight for a light breakfast and then prepare for your summit ascent.

  • Because you will climb to the summit in the dark, you will need to have your flashlights. It will also be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is an important time to keep using the 'slowly slowly' technique. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise.

  • Switchback up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m/18,640 ft between 4 and 6 am. At this point, you will have a view of the fabled crater, and its icecaps will be facing you. Two hours of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snows will take you to Kilimanjaro's true summit, Uhuru Peak. Spend some time here taking photos.

  • After your summit photos and taking in all the views, descend back to the Kibo Huts.

  • Have lunch, rest, collect your equipment, and continue down through the saddle to the Horombo Huts.

Have dinner and overnight stay at Horombo Camp.

6
Day 06

Descent to Marangu Gate and Return to Moshi

  • After a long sleep, you will be awakened for breakfast and packing.

  • Continue your descent through the moorlands to Mandara Huts.

  • Have lunch and then proceed on your triumphant recessional down through lush forests to the Marangu Park Gate.

  • After signing out, a vehicle will take you back to Amek Safari Lodge in Moshi. It is definitely time for your certificate presentation and celebration.
