• The day centres around Tunis's archaeological heritage and its rich architecture. This morning includes a visit to the Bardo, Tunisia's National Museum, with its archaeological collections. The museum displays the world's largest collection of Roman mosaics and other priceless treasures from various territories throughout Tunisia.

• From the Bardo, continue to the Medina, the old Arabic city, for a walk around its most interesting monuments.

• After lunch, drive to Carthage and explore the ruins of the Roman Baths of Antonine, the Roman villas, and Byrsa Hill.

• This morning, explore Kairouan, Tunisia's holy city, said to be the site of the first mosque in Africa. During medieval times, Kairouan rose to become an important centre for trade and crafts. The region still provides the base for much of Tunisia's craft industry, particularly rugs and textiles.

• After lunch, drive to Tozeur.

• After breakfast, set out for the town of Metlaoui, where you will board the Red Lizard train. The Red Lizard inches through narrow passageways and tunnels dug into the canyon walls and deep gorges.

• During the train ride, discover the Selja Gorge and admire the incredible landscape.

• Depart southwest to reach the mountain oases of Midès, Chebika, and Tamerza. Here, enjoy a walking tour among the palm trees and natural water springs.

• From Chebika, head back to Tozeur.

• From Tozeur, head to Sidi Bouhlel, where many scenes from Star Wars: A New Hope were filmed against a still very recognizable rocky background.

• Next, depart for further exploration of the south, crossing the impressive salt lake.

• Stop in Douz, a small town that appears to be set down amidst the dunes. The village is known as the gateway to the Sahara.

• After lunch, drive to Ksar Ghilane, a small oasis in southern Tunisia located on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental. This is the Sahara of your dreams, where extraordinarily fine orange sand dunes stretch for miles and miles.

• After breakfast, head to the Tatooine area, famous for its ksars, fortified Berber villages.

• Enjoy exploring Ksar Haddada (Mos Espa slave quarters), Guermessa, a gorgeous Berber hilltop village, and Ksar Ouled Soltane, a popular fortified granary famed as the location of the Slave Quarters.

• From Tatooine, head to Medenine, the filming location of Anakin Skywalker's home. The scene was shot in the Berber granary.

• Next, drive to Jerba, the island of dreams and the location of Ben Kenobi's Hermitage (the home of Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Toshi Station, a power station situated next to the fictional town of Anchorhead.

• In the late afternoon, depart Jerba for Matmata, where you will explore the Lars Homestead interior, a traditional Berber troglodyte underground building now serving as Hotel Sidi Driss.

• Today, after visiting Matmata, depart for El Jem, where you will explore the impressive Roman amphitheatre dating back to the 3rd century AD.
