Naqsh-e-Rustam, Persepolis & Pasargadae tour
Begin with a visit to the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire; Persepolis. The earliest remains of Persepolis date back to 515 BCE. It exemplifies the Achaemenid style of architecture. Alexander the Great had entered Persepolis in January 330 BC and committed an uncharacteristic act of complete destruction that mystifies historians today and is a reason for these city ruins. Though a shadow of its former self, one can see of what is left of soaring pillars, terraces and sculptures here The most impressive sights here are the bas reliefs which line the entire site and tells stories of ancient kings who used to come to this ancient capital city.
Drive a couple of miles to see the ancient necropolis of Naqsh-e-Rustam of the Achaemenid dynasty. Witness four large tombs here with plenty of ancient rock-cut reliefs cut into the cliff. It is at this Necropolis, where Darius and his successors were buried. Carved into the side of a cliff, the site is extraordinary in its magnitude and sheer ambition and does not disappoint even after the impressive Persepolis site.
End tour with a final stop at Pasargadae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great (559–530 BC) and contains his tomb. Spend some time exploring this site and enjoy scenic views from this site into that of the surrounding areas.
