Thimphu City Highlights and Cultural Encounters

  • Meet your local tour guide in Thimphu for pick-up and transfer.

  • Start your day by visiting the Memorial Chorten, a temple that depicts larger-than-life deities, with 36 of them in erotic poses. Circumambulate the Chorten three times in a clockwise direction along with the locals, and don't forget to make a wish to the wish-granting statue of the Buddha.

  • Meet the national animal of Bhutan, the Takin, an exotic and unusual-looking animal with the head of a goat and the body of a cow. Marvel at the story as your guide enthusiastically shares the legend behind this unique creation.

  • Visit the Centenary Farmers' Market, which will enthral you as you observe the residents of Thimphu. Negotiate with farmers for the freshest organic produce of the region, and don't hesitate to purchase the season's choice of locally grown fruits.

  • Enjoy a sumptuous Bhutanese lunch and watch the students of the National Institute of Zorig Chosum (Arts and Crafts) as they learn the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan.

  • Continue to the Royal Textile Museum, a state-of-the-art museum showcasing an exemplary display of the art of weaving and textiles. The museum also currently displays the bridal dress and handcrafted shoes worn by Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema during the royal wedding in 2011.

  • Proceed to the spectacular Tashichho Dzong, meaning "Palace of the Glorious Religion," which will give you an insight into how massive fortresses were built in ancient times in the traditional style without any nails, steel, architectural designs, or blueprints. This Dzong is an ostentatious display of the architectural grandeur of the Bhutanese.

  • Go to a local pub or bar, where you can unwind and relive the day.
