Day 01

Explore James Island and the Villages of Juffureh and Albreda

  • Pick up from your hotel and transfer to Banjul.

For the land tour:

  • Take a ferry across the Gambian River to the bustling north bank at Barra.

  • Drive to Juffureh and Albreda in a 4x4 vehicle for 45 minutes, passing through local villages along the way.

  • Stop for refreshments on the way.

  • Meet your official guide and learn about the slave trade and life in the village.

  • Board an authentic fishing boat for the unforgettable crossing to the former slave colony at James Island, officially renamed KunteKinteh Island by the President of The Gambia in 2011.

  • Tour the island and learn about the torturous conditions in which enslaved people were kept.

  • Return to the mainland.

  • Tour the Museum of Slavery and see an authentic version of an actual slave ship.

  • Visit the children's centre in the village, which gives local children facilities to learn and play outside school hours.

  • Buy traditional crafts made by local people and sweets for the return journey to give to the many children you will pass on the road.

  • Stop by to see local people harvesting their peanut crops.

  • Transfer back to your hotel.

For the river tour:

  • Drive 30 minutes to Denton Bridge, where you will join your boat. Choose from a fully air-conditioned catamaran or a local double-deck boat for the two-hour voyage to KunteKinteh Island, following the tour described above, including visits to the village and museum.

6:30 AM: Pick up from the hotel.
