Culinary Tour and Market Experience in Colombo

  • 8:30 am - Enjoy a freshly made fruit juice or a herbal drink, and wander around our villa to refresh yourself and prepare for the tour while the experienced guide briefs you on the agenda. You will also have the chance to select a menu for the preparation from our family recipes, with options that work for everyone.

  • 8:45 am - Be astounded by the marketplace. Most probably, the local market will not be as you imagined; it is similar to European eco shops. Without visiting the local market, you will not gain a deep understanding of how to properly pick the right vegetables, spices, and other ingredients. Receive plenty of traditional tips as locals help you choose the best spices and vegetables with real examples during the market visit. In the end, you can pick your desired tropical fruits for dessert. Additionally, you will learn about the ethics of the local market, which you cannot find in guidebooks.

  • 10:00 am - Learn more about the traditional techniques incorporated into a regular Sri Lankan meal preparation. Similar to the palm technique used by Italians to measure spaghetti, Sri Lankans also have many traditional techniques and tactics when it comes to home cooking that are not explained, or rather cannot be explained, in cookbooks or videos. The chef is well aware of those tips and tricks, proven through generations, that make your food tastier with better aroma and colour. He will involve you in every step of cooking, from cleaning and measuring to the actual cooking, while sharing the tips associated with each stage. We may take relatively longer than Europeans or Americans to prepare a meal, but you will never regret the time spent once you taste the food.

  • 12:00 pm - Understand the art of eating like a local. No matter where you are, there are always certain manners to be followed at the dining table, so eating like a local can be trickier than you might think. Every culture has its own food beliefs, traditions, and etiquette. Here, the first rule is to serve others before ourselves. Let yourself go from tourist to local in Sri Lanka as you learn Sri Lankan dining etiquette and manners.

  • 1:00 pm - At the end of the experience, you will be awarded a cooking certificate and recipes.

  • Unlike in the West, dining in Sri Lanka is still a ritual. We are taught to serve others before ourselves. We should be mindful that others have enough to eat and drink before serving ourselves. Like Italians, for Sri Lankans, walking while eating is considered disrespectful. So, understanding the local dining protocol is a crucial factor that helps you enjoy the meal to the maximum while allowing you to realize the culture associated with it.
