The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arrival in Ljubljana and Old Town Stroll

Your Balkan birding and heritage journey begins in Ljubljana, Slovenia's green and charming capital. On arrival at Ljubljana Airport, meet your tour leader and transfer privately to your centrally located hotel.

Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a gentle first stroll through the Old Town: Prešeren Square, the Triple Bridge, the Ljubljanica River, and the Dragon Bridge. Keep an eye on the river for grey herons, mallards, and the occasional kingfisher.

In the evening, meet your tour leader for a welcome dinner at a carefully selected local restaurant.

2
Day 02

Ljubljana Guided Tour and Lake Bled

After breakfast, meet your licensed local guide for a relaxed tour of Ljubljana, from the riverside cafés and the Central Market to the castle hill views over the Julian Alps.

Continue to Lake Bled, one of Europe's most beautiful Alpine lakes. Walk along the lakefront, take a traditional pletna boat to Bled Island, and watch for great crested grebes, little grebes, and other waterbirds on the calm water.

Return to Ljubljana for the evening.

3
Day 03

Lake Cerknica Birdwatching and Zagreb

An early start for Lake Cerknica, Slovenia's famous intermittent lake, which floods and drains with the seasons and attracts remarkable birdlife. Spend about 4-5 hours with a private specialist ornithologist, partly on foot on easy paths and partly from observation points, with a spotting scope.

Depending on the season, look for herons, egrets, white storks, ducks and geese, waders, and birds of prey - and, in spring and summer, the calls of corncrakes from the wet meadows.

Continue to Zagreb, Croatia's elegant capital, for an introductory walk through the Upper Town and St. Mark's Square.

4
Day 04

Plitvice Lakes National Park and Split

After breakfast, travel south to Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's most celebrated natural wonder, famous for its turquoise terraced lakes, waterfalls, and wooden walkways through the forest.

Follow a relaxed route of about 3 hours, including the park's electric boat when operating. The beech and fir forests are home to woodpeckers, dippers along the streams, and grey wagtails by the waterfalls.

Continue to Split on the Adriatic coast and check in at your hotel.

5
Day 05

Split Old Town and the Adriatic Coast to Dubrovnik

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a tour of Split's UNESCO-listed old town, built within the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian: the Peristyle, the palace cellars, the historic lanes, and the Riva promenade.

Continue south along the scenic Adriatic coastal road, past the Makarska Riviera and the islands of central Dalmatia, to Dubrovnik.

Check in at your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

6
Day 06

Dubrovnik Old Town and Free Afternoon

Meet your licensed local guide for a tour of Dubrovnik's UNESCO-listed Old Town: the Stradun, Onofrio's Fountain, the Rector's Palace, and the story of the Republic of Ragusa.

The afternoon is free. Walk the city walls at your own pace, or take a short boat to Lokrum Island, a nature reserve where shags, gulls, and woodland birds share the paths with resident peacocks.

7
Day 07

Neretva Delta Birdwatching and Into Bosnia

Leave Dubrovnik for the Neretva Delta, where the river meets the Adriatic in a mosaic of reedbeds, lagoons, and orchards - one of the most important wetlands on the eastern Adriatic. Spend the morning at the best observation areas with a local birding contact, looking for pygmy cormorants, herons, egrets, kingfishers, and marsh harriers.

Follow the Neretva valley into Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a stop at Počitelj, an Ottoman stone village above the river.

Continue to Mostar and check in at your hotel.

8
Day 08

Hutovo Blato, Blagaj Tekke and Mostar

Spend the morning in Hutovo Blato Nature Park, the secluded Bosnian part of the Neretva wetland, with an experienced birdwatching guide. A three-hour private boat trip reaches reed-fringed lakes that are hard to see from land; pygmy cormorants, herons, egrets, coots, and ducks are typical, with flooded meadows and observation points afterwards.

Continue to Blagaj and the 16th-century Dervish Tekke at the spring of the Buna River, where crag martins and alpine swifts often fly along the cliff.

In the afternoon, meet your local guide for a tour of Mostar: the UNESCO-listed Old Bridge, the Kujundžiluk bazaar, and the Ottoman quarter.

9
Day 09

Neretva Valley to Sarajevo and Farewell Dinner

Travel north through the green Neretva valley, with stops at Jablanica and the old bridge of Konjic; watch for dippers and wagtails along the river.

In Sarajevo, meet your local guide for a tour of Baščaršija, Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the Latin Bridge, and the Austro-Hungarian quarter, where East meets West.

In the evening, celebrate the end of your journey with a farewell dinner of traditional Bosnian cuisine.

10
Day 10

Departure from Sarajevo

After breakfast, enjoy free time in Sarajevo, depending on your flight schedule.

At the right time, your driver will take you privately to Sarajevo International Airport. If you are continuing with Part 2 of our Balkan birding journey through Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia, we will arrange your onward transfer.
