Sunrise at Angkor Wat and Temples of Angkor
Begin your day early with a memorable sunrise at Angkor Wat, the magnificent temple built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. You will have time to admire the temple's impressive architecture, long galleries, detailed bas-reliefs, courtyards, and iconic central towers.
After Angkor Wat, continue to Angkor Thom, the great fortified royal city associated with King Jayavarman VII. Enter through the South Gate, where a dramatic row of gods and demons represents the famous Hindu story of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Angkor Thom covers about 9 square kilometres and contains several important monuments.
Inside the ancient city, visit Bayon Temple, famous for its serene and enigmatic stone faces. This temple provides an opportunity to learn about the religious and political world of Jayavarman VII and the transformation of Khmer architecture during the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
Continue through the forest to Ta Prohm, one of Angkor's most atmospheric temples. Here, massive tree roots grow around and over the ancient stone structures, creating a remarkable relationship between architecture and nature. You can explore the galleries, courtyards, doorways, and surviving carvings while learning about the temple's history and restoration.
The tour can continue to Ta Keo, Banteay Kdei, and Srah Srang, depending on the time and your interests. Ta Keo is a monumental temple-mountain dedicated to Shiva, while Banteay Kdei is a Buddhist monastic complex from the period of Jayavarman VII. Srah Srang, an ancient reservoir, provides a peaceful place to appreciate the landscape around Angkor.
