The Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca Cola Route Kilimanjaro," is one of the easiest and most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, thanks to its gradual slope and well-defined path. This 6-day trek takes you from lush rainforest through moorland and alpine desert to Uhuru Peak, with an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut to improve your chances on summit night. A distinctive feature of this route is its dormitory-style huts, offering a more comfortable alternative to camping. It is ideal for trekkers who prefer established trails and a classic Kilimanjaro climbing experience.

The itinerary

1
Day 01

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut Through Rainforest

After breakfast, we will collect you from your hotel and transfer you to Marangu Gate for registration. Our porters will prepare and pack the supplies and luggage before we begin the ascent on a cleared ridge trail through the rainforest.

The forest, covered with mist and dripping with beards of moss, is also where most of Kilimanjaro's animals are found. We will spend our first night at Mandara Hut, a group of wooden A-framed huts set in a forest clearing. Water is piped into the camp from springs above, and there are flush toilets behind the main hut.

2
Day 02

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut via Maundi Crater

From Mandara Hut, the trail passes through a short stretch of forest, skirting the base of the Maundi Crater and emerging into the transition zone from rainforest to moorland. After about 6 hours, we arrive at Horombo Hut.

3
Day 03

Acclimatisation Day at Horombo Hut

This extra day and night at Horombo is ideal for good acclimatisation. A hike toward Mawenzi, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way, is strongly recommended, as it will further assist with acclimatisation. The hike takes about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down.

4
Day 04

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut Across the Alpine Desert

We continue our ascent into the alpine desert zone, passing the last place where water is available at 4130 m. From Kibo Hut, the summit is now a further 1195 m of ascent.

We will make our summit ascent tonight, so we will go to bed early to get as much rest as possible.

5
Day 05

Midnight Summit Attempt to Uhuru Peak and Descent

Today's the day you finally climb to the summit. You embark along a rocky path at midnight, reaching the first checkpoint at 5150 meters, Hans Meyer Cave. The path continues for another two hours until you reach Gilman's Point. This is where you take a break, rest those aching limbs, and refuel your body. After adequate rest, you push on to Uhuru Peak, where you can click some of the most stunning pictures.

Begin your descent back to Kibo Hut and finally back to Horombo Hut. This is surely going to be the longest day of your life, but it is also bound to be the most enriching one so far.

6
Day 06

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

On your final day on the trek, after breakfast, we descend a further 1740 m to Marangu Gate to collect your summit certificates from the Park Headquarters. You will then transfer to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration.

  • Tips

Know before you go

  • The Marangu Route, often called the 'Coca-Cola route,' is the oldest path up Mount Kilimanjaro and one of the most popular ones. By choosing the Marangu Route, you will repeat the very first successful Kilimanjaro summit by Hans Meyer, which took place in 1889. The trail lies inside Kilimanjaro National Park, traversing all climatic zones of the mountain, from tropical forest to alpine desert. Uniquely, it is the only route that offers dormitory-style huts for overnight stays.

  • Considering the Marangu Route? It's a good choice for climbing Kilimanjaro during the rainy seasons, from mid-March to late May and from late October to late December, because the huts will keep you dry and comfortable. The Marangu Route is available in 5- and 6-day variations, with the second one being significantly less difficult.

  • Safety first: To maintain our strict safety standards, mountain expeditions are available only to participants aged 12-70 years.
