Immersive Mukuni Village and Toka-Leya Cultural Experience

Mukuni Village Tour is a deeply immersive cultural experience that brings you face-to-face with the centuries-old traditions of the Toka-Leya people.

The Royal Palace: View the home of Chief Mukuni. You will learn about the complex traditional leadership system, royal succession laws, and the historic 13th-century roots of the village.

Meet the Village Elders: Gain firsthand insight into how traditional tribal courts solve community disputes alongside modern Zambian law.

Traditional Homestead Architecture: Walk through family compounds built from local mud, poles, and thatch. You will see how these structures are designed to stay cool in the African heat.

Traditional Cooking Demonstrations: Watch - and sometimes try your hand at - pounding maize into mealie-meal to prepare nshima, the local staple food, over an open wood fire.

Meet the Residents: Chat with local families about their daily routines, schools, and how they balance ancient tribal customs with modern 21st-century life.

The Curio Craft Market: Walk through a vibrant open-air market showcasing the village's famous woodcarvers, potters, and basket weavers.

Blacksmithing Demonstrations: See local craftsmen melt and forge metal using traditional bellows and techniques passed down through generations.

Traditional Medicine: Learn about the role of local herbs and traditional healers who still provide natural remedies to the community.

Music and Dance: Many tours conclude with a high-energy performance of traditional drumming and welcoming dances by village youth.

What to bring

  • Cash (Zambian Kwacha or small USD bills): credit cards are not accepted in the village. You will need cash to buy authentic woodcarvings or pottery at the curio market, and for tipping your resident guide or traditional dancers.

  • Sturdy walking shoes: you will be walking for 1 to 2 hours on uneven dirt, gravel, and sandy paths. Closed-toe shoes or sturdy sneakers are highly recommended over flip-flops.

  • Sun protection: the village layout is quite open with minimal shade. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.

  • A refillable water bottle: staying hydrated is critical in the heat. Bring enough water for a couple of hours of walking.

  • Camera or smartphone: photography is allowed, but remember the golden rule - always ask your guide or the resident for permission before taking a picture of a person, a child, or the inside of a home.

  • Modest clothing: dress in respectful, lightweight clothing. It is best to wear shirts that cover your shoulders and shorts or skirts that come down near or below the knee.

  • Neutral tones: lightweight cotton or linen fabrics will help keep you cool in the heat.

Know before you go

  • Visiting Mukuni Village is an incredibly rewarding cultural experience, but because it is a real, functioning community rather than a staged tourist theme park, there are a few essential things to keep in mind.

  • Before you head out to this 13th-century settlement, make sure you know the following.

  • Dress modestly: while some tour operators note a "formal" expectation for visiting royalty, the real-world rule is smart-casual and modest. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees to show respect for the local Toka-Leya customs. Avoid overly revealing or offensive attire.

  • Footwear: you will be walking entirely on uneven dirt, sand, and gravel paths. Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are highly recommended.

  • Sun protection: there is very little shade as you walk between the homesteads. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.

  • Always ask first: Mukuni is a living, working village of about 7,000 residents. It is their home, not a museum set. Never take photos or videos of individuals, children, or the interiors of huts without explicitly asking your guide or the resident for permission first.

  • Greeting elders: follow your guide's lead on proper greetings. Showing respect to village elders and the headman is a core pillar of local culture.
