Brought to life through a partnership between Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary and Art of Africa, this experience offers a deeply meaningful way to connect with nature, wildlife, and your own imagination. The adventure begins with a fascinating introduction to the sanctuary's story, its origins, its mission, and its vital work caring for elephants that have been orphaned, abandoned, or injured. From there, you are guided to a tranquil waterhole, where painting materials await beneath the sweeping canopy of a Mopane tree as elephants roam freely nearby.

Elephant Encounter and Plein Air Painting Experience

  • Pickup and Sanctuary Arrival

Begin with pickup and transfer to The Elephant Wallow, a natural oasis nestled within the pristine African bush just a few kilometers outside of town.

  • Conscious Elephant Interaction

Meet your expert guides and get introduced to the sanctuary's rescued elephant herd. You will learn about their history, individual herd dynamics, and current regional conservation efforts before spending time observing, interacting with, and feeding them at close range.

  • Plein Air Painting Workshop

Move down to the edge of a watering hole where individual wooden easels, canvases, brushes, and paint palettes are set up beneath the shade of a massive Mopane tree.

While the elephants splash, play, and wallow freely in the mud, a private art tutor guides you through a step-by-step painting lesson. You will capture the majestic creatures and the surrounding landscape on canvas. No prior painting experience is required.

  • Return Transfer

Collect your freshly painted masterpiece to take home as the ultimate safari souvenir and board your return transfer back to town.
