Mabamba Swamp Bay is a large wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria, covering 2,424 hectares of papyrus, ferns, water lilies, and other grasses in the shallow waters.

The wetland is a favourable habitat for many water-endemic birds, with up to 260 species recorded, including annual migrants from Europe and other parts of the world.

Mabamba Swamp is ideal for birding adventures and is especially renowned as the intriguing home of the shoebill, a rare sight for many birding enthusiasts.

Other birds you may see while visiting this swamp include the African jacana, purple heron, black kite, African fish eagle, pied and malachite kingfisher, yellow-billed duck, white-faced whistling duck, cattle egret, long-toed lapwing, spur-winged lapwing, papyrus gonolek, hammerkop, black-winged stilt, and common and wood sandpiper, among others.

The itinerary

Day 01

  • Pickup: After an early breakfast, our driver-guide will pick you up and set off for an exciting day in Mabamba Swamp where you will come face to face with the rare shoebill.

  • Transfer: Proceed to Lake Victoria at Nakiwogo landing site to board a motorised boat to the Swamp.

  • Boat: On arrival at the swamp, you will join a local guide and board another wooden motorised boat, riding through the waterways to access different areas of the swamp while searching for the shoebill and other water birds, while enjoying the panorama of the wetland landscape.

  • Boat: Later, take the boat ride to Lwaji Island in the middle of Lake Victoria for your breathtaking Equator visit.

  • Activity: Visit the spot where the Equator intersects the island.

  • Activity: Take memorable photos at the Equator line.

  • Activity: Also get the chance to Visit the Rock and Keep an eye out for many bird species like the pelican, kingfisher, grey-headed gull, and yellow bill.

  • Wildlife: Look out for other features like monitor lizards and otters.

  • Return: Later, we dock back at Nakiwogo Landing site, and your driver-guide will pick you up and proceed for your visit to the Entebbe craft village before your transfer back to your Hotel or Airport.
