The itinerary

Day 01

Port Moresby to Goroka and Asaro Mudmen Experience

Take a morning flight from Port Moresby to Goroka with Air Niugini (PX 960 - 6:00 am / 7:10 am).

On arrival at Goroka Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your lodge - Bird of Paradise Hotel or similar - close to the showgrounds.

In the afternoon, enjoy an exclusive visit to Asaro Mudmen Village, including a private sing-sing, Mudmen legend storytelling, and a mumu lunch. This is the calm before the big show and is perfect for photos without the crowds.

In the evening, join a welcome dinner and festival briefing. Overnight in Goroka.

Day 02

Goroka Festival Day 1 and Coffee Plantation Visit

Spend the full day at Goroka Showgrounds for PNG's biggest sing-sing, featuring 80+ tribes and 40,000+ performers from Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Hagen, Sepik, Gulf, and more.

Enjoy reserved grandstand seating while your guide explains each group, including the Mudmen, Skeleton Tribe, Huli Wigmen, and Baining Fire Dancers.

Lunch is at the showground (bring cash), with water and hats provided.

At sunset, visit a local coffee plantation - Goroka is PNG's coffee capital.

Overnight in Goroka.

Day 03

Goroka Festival Finale and Village Encounters

Start early for the best light for photography. Morning is the most colourful, with prize-giving and final dances.

At midday, take a village tour including JK McCarthy Museum, the local market, and bilum weavers.

In the afternoon, you are free to return to the festival or visit nearby Bena Bena village for a small private sing-sing.

Enjoy a farewell BBQ dinner with a cultural performance at the lodge.

Overnight in Goroka.

Day 04

Goroka to Port Moresby with Optional City Tour

Take a morning flight from Goroka to Port Moresby (PX 961).

Option A: Transfer to your international flight.

Option B: Take a half-day Port Moresby city tour visiting Parliament, the National Museum, and Nature Park before hotel drop-off.

Know before you go

1. The Festival:
Goroka Show is PNG's oldest and biggest sing-sing. 80+ tribes, 4000+ performers. Very loud, very colourful, very dusty. It runs from 9 am to 4 pm at Goroka Showgrounds. Saturday is the main day; Sunday is the finale and prize-giving.
2. Weather:
Goroka is 1,600 m high. Days are hot at 26-28°C, and nights are cold at 14-16°C. Rain can come anytime in September. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a rain jacket.
3. Flights and Luggage:
POM-Goroka flights are 1 hr 10 min with Air Niugini. Strict 15 kg checked plus 7 kg hand luggage. Excess is K8 per kg. Flights are often full during festival week - book early.
4. Accommodation:
Goroka books out 6 months ahead. Hotels are basic 3-star standard - hot water, WiFi sometimes, and power cuts happen. Don't expect POM 5-star. We use Bird of Paradise Hotel / Pacific Gardens - both within walking distance of the showgrounds.
5. Safety and Cash:
Goroka is safe inside the festival grounds with police and security. Outside, move with a guide only. Bring small cash (K20, K50) for bilums, coffee, and artefacts at the market. No cards at the showground. ATMs are unreliable - withdraw in POM.
6. Cultural Etiquette:
- ALWAYS ask before taking a close-up photo - some groups will ask K5-K20 for a photo.
- Don't touch headdresses, drums, or bows.
- Listen to your guide - he will tell you where you can stand.
- Show respect and smile - these tribes walked 2-3 days to be there.
7. What to Bring:
Daypack, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, rain jacket, power bank, earplugs (kundu drums are loud), comfortable closed shoes (ground is dusty/muddy).
8. Health:
Altitude: Drink water. Malaria is low risk in the Highlands, but bring repellent. Bring your own medication. The hospital in Goroka is basic.
9. Photography:
Best light is 9 am-11 am and 3 pm-4 pm. The centre grandstand is best for photos. Drone NOT allowed without a CASA PNG permit.
