Durmitor National Park & Black Lake
We enter Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Montenegro's most spectacular mountain landscapes.
Our main natural highlight is Black Lake, beautifully set beneath the imposing Mount Međed, whose dark pine-covered slopes rise dramatically above the water. Local people have long regarded Međed as the lake's guardian, and the mountain and lake are closely intertwined in the stories and traditions of the Durmitor region.
Black Lake is actually a fascinating system of two glacial lakes - Big and Small Lake - connected by a narrow channel. Their relationship with the underground waters of Durmitor creates one of the area's most intriguing natural phenomena: depending on water levels and the season, the lake system is connected through underground channels with the Tara and Piva river basins. Modern hydrological research has confirmed these remarkable subterranean connections - something local people had spoken about for generations.
And then there is the legend.
One local tradition tells of a saint and a monastery said to have once stood where the lake lies today. According to the story, after the monks deceived him, Saint Sava cursed the place, causing the earth to sink and the monastery and settlement to disappear beneath the waters. Whether legend or history, the story has remained part of the oral tradition surrounding Crno Lake for generations.
In spring, another spectacular phenomenon reveals the hidden world beneath Durmitor. As snow melts, underground waters can burst forth at Čeline, producing powerful cascades above the Small Lake - a natural event locals traditionally called "pukle Čeline." The water continues its mysterious journey through the underground passages of the Durmitor massif.
Take your time here to walk beside the lake, breathe the crisp mountain air, photograph the reflections of the surrounding peaks, and simply absorb the silence.
In winter, when snow covers the forests and Međed rises above a frozen or snow-framed lake, the atmosphere becomes almost otherworldly.
Žabljak & the Taste of the Mountains
We continue towards Žabljak, Montenegro's highest town and the gateway to Durmitor. Here, your guide will introduce you to local traditions and the mountain lifestyle shaped by long winters, livestock, and life in a demanding natural environment.
Free time is reserved for lunch, with the opportunity to taste traditional specialities such as kačamak, cicvara, or local trout, or enjoy a quick snack of beef kebabs in warm flatbread with creamy kajmak.
Tara Canyon - The Tears of Europe
Then comes one of the true highlights of the journey: Tara Canyon.
Carved through the limestone mountains over countless centuries, the Tara has created a spectacular world of towering cliffs, deep gorges, forests, and crystal-clear water. At its deepest point, the canyon reaches around 1,333 metres, making it one of the deepest canyons in the world.
Standing above the canyon, the scale is difficult to capture in a photograph. Far below, the turquoise Tara winds through the mountains while enormous forested walls rise on either side.
Đurđevića Tara Bridge
Our final major highlight is the spectacular Đurđevića Tara Bridge, an extraordinary five-arch concrete bridge stretching 365 metres across the canyon, built in 1940.
Take a walk across the bridge and enjoy 360-degree mountain views over the Tara Canyon, the river far below, and the surrounding Durmitor landscape.
There is time to photograph the bridge from different viewpoints and simply take in the scenery. For those who enjoy a little adrenaline, the famous zipline above the canyon is also available as an optional seasonal activity.
