Plav, Gusinje and the Hidden Prokletije

Leave Montenegro's familiar landscapes behind and journey deep into the wild northeast of the country, where crystal-clear lakes meet some of the most dramatic peaks in the Balkans and ancient traditions are still part of everyday mountain life.

Your experience begins with pickup from your accommodation and a comfortable private ride through Montenegro's spectacular interior. We travel through Morača Canyon and Platije, continuing across Veruša and Bjelasica, with a scenic photo stop along the way - a chance to step out, breathe the fresh mountain air, and simply take in the vast landscape around you.

For part of the journey, we travel alongside the historic railway, winding through cliffs, tunnels, and bridges that are an attraction in their own right. As we move deeper into the northeast, the mountains become wilder, the villages smaller, and the landscape increasingly remote.

Plav - Where the Mountains Begin to Tell Their Stories

Our journey brings us to Plav Lake, surrounded by the magnificent peaks of Prokletije.

Here, history stretches far beyond modern Montenegro. People have lived among these mountains since antiquity, adapting to a landscape that was beautiful and fertile in places, but also incredibly difficult to access.

If the weather and water temperature are right, you will have the opportunity to refresh yourself in the clear waters of Plav Lake.

We continue to Gusinje, a historic mountain town once located on important trade routes connecting different parts of the Balkans.

And this is where the experience becomes personal: our guide has family roots in Gusinje. Alongside the history, you will hear local stories, legends, and insights into the traditional mountain life of the people who have called these valleys home for generations.

Ali Pasha's Springs

We then reach Ali Pasha's Springs, where crystal-clear mountain water bursts from the foothills of Prokletije.

Surrounded by greenery and towering peaks, the springs are one of the region's most beautiful natural landmarks. On a warm day, there may be no better way to experience them than by cooling your feet - or taking a refreshing dip - in their exceptionally clear waters.

Into the Cursed Mountains

From here, we enter Prokletije National Park, known as the "Cursed Mountains" - a name born from centuries of legends and the formidable character of a mountain range that remained almost inaccessible for much of its history.

Among its giants rises Zla Kolata (2,534 m), Montenegro's highest summit, while the spectacular Karanfili peaks dominate the Grebaje Valley with their jagged limestone walls.

But the mountains hold stories far older than the names we know today.

More than 3,000 years ago, people in these mountains were already using the movement of the sun to measure time. A remarkable Bronze Age stone discovered in the Prokletije has been identified by researchers as an ancient analemmatic sundial, with markings believed to date from approximately the 15th-12th centuries BC.

We will not visit the stone itself on this itinerary, but its story offers a fascinating glimpse into just how deep the human history of these seemingly remote mountains really goes.

Grebaje Valley & Oko Skakavice

We continue into the breathtaking Grebaje Valley, where the immense Karanfili peaks rise almost vertically above the valley floor.

This is Montenegro at its wildest - dramatic, peaceful, and wonderfully far from the crowds.

Our journey continues to Oko Skakavice, a remarkably clear mountain spring hidden among the peaks. Depending on the weather and water temperature, you may have another opportunity for a refreshing mountain swim.

Taste the Mountains

Free time is reserved for lunch, with the opportunity to experience the flavours of northern Montenegro - homemade pita, kačamak, cicvara, locally sourced lamb or veal, fresh milk, and creamy kajmak.

These are not simply dishes on a menu; they are part of the traditional food culture of communities that have lived from these mountains for generations.

A Day Beyond the Ordinary

This fully private experience brings together nature, breathtaking scenery, history, culture, local life, gastronomy, and adventure.

You will cross dramatic mountain landscapes, discover a region shaped by centuries of tradition, hear stories passed down locally, and stand beneath some of Montenegro's most spectacular peaks.

And if the weather is on our side, you may finish the day with a swim in a mountain lake or crystal-clear spring - one of those unexpected moments that turns a sightseeing trip into a story worth taking home.
