Kolašin, Bjelasica and Morača Monastery Private Journey

Step away from Montenegro's busy coast and enter a world of breathtaking mountain landscapes, authentic local traditions, remarkable history, and centuries-old ways of life.

This fully private experience takes you from the historic mountain town of Kolašin, across the spectacular slopes of Bjelasica, and through the dramatic Morača Canyon to one of Montenegro's greatest medieval treasures - Morača Monastery.

Your day begins with pickup from your accommodation and a comfortable private ride towards Montenegro's spectacular interior. Along the way, your licensed local guide will introduce you to Montenegro's cultural and historical heritage, sharing local stories and giving you a glimpse into the places we pass rather than simply driving through them.

Kolašin - From Ottoman Frontier to Mountain Destination

We begin with a relaxed walk through the centre of Kolašin, a small mountain town with a surprisingly turbulent history.

Founded by the Ottomans in the 17th century as a strategic frontier settlement, Kolašin spent centuries caught between different powers and local liberation movements. Its story continues through Montenegro's struggle for independence, the First World War and, most notably, the Second World War, when Kolašin became the wartime capital of Montenegro and an important centre of the anti-fascist movement.

Today, the same town is experiencing a completely different chapter. Surrounded by mountains and forests, Kolašin has become one of Montenegro's leading year-round mountain destinations, attracting visitors in summer for nature and outdoor experiences and in winter for snow and skiing.

As we walk, we will connect these different chapters of Kolašin's story - from its Ottoman origins and wartime past to the modern mountain lifestyle emerging today.

Bjelasica - Where Mountain Life Still Breathes

From Kolašin we continue towards Bjelasica and Kolašin 1600, where the scenery opens dramatically into vast green mountain pastures surrounded by magnificent peaks.

This is where the experience becomes truly immersive.

Depending on the season, you may see flocks of sheep grazing in the distance, traditional shepherds' cabins scattered across the slopes, and local herders continuing customs that have shaped life in these mountains for generations.

And wild horses are not an unusual sight here - with some luck, you may see them running freely across the green fields of Bjelasica, creating one of those unforgettable Montenegro moments that no itinerary can guarantee but the mountains sometimes simply give you.

For an even more spectacular perspective, an optional cable-car ride takes you above 2,000 metres, opening breathtaking views towards the surrounding peaks and valleys.

And when winter arrives, Bjelasica changes completely - snow-covered pastures, white mountain tops, and a magical alpine atmosphere create an entirely different experience.

Flavours of the Highlands

We leave free time for an optional traditional mountain lunch, giving you the opportunity to experience the gastronomy of the highlands rather than simply passing through them.

Depending on the season and restaurant, you may try homemade pita prepared with hand-stretched pastry, kačamak, cicvara, locally sourced veal or lamb, fresh river trout, homemade sour milk, and creamy kajmak - traditional dishes prepared in the local way and closely connected with mountain life.

It is more than a meal; it is a taste of the food culture of Montenegro's highland communities, where local produce, livestock, and traditional recipes have been part of everyday life for generations.

Morača Canyon and the Medieval Morača Monastery

Leaving Bjelasica behind, we continue through the spectacular Morača River Canyon, where towering limestone cliffs and deep valleys accompany us through one of Montenegro's most dramatic landscapes.

Hidden within this scenery stands Morača Monastery, founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović of the Nemanjić dynasty.

Almost eight centuries later, the monastery remains one of Montenegro's most important religious, cultural, and artistic monuments.

We explore the monastery complex and the Church of the Dormition, renowned for its remarkable medieval frescoes and extraordinary artistic heritage.

The monastery is also surrounded by local traditions and legends. One tells of a mysterious light appearing near the nearby Svetigora waterfall, interpreted as a divine sign guiding the founder to this secluded location. Other stories speak of the immense effort required to transport the monastery's building materials through the surrounding mountains.

A Journey Into the Heart of Montenegro

This is not simply a mountain day trip.

It is a fully private cultural, historical, religious, gastronomic, and sightseeing experience, created for travellers who want to see Montenegro beyond the famous coastline - to meet its landscapes, taste its traditions, hear its stories, and understand the people who have lived among these mountains for centuries.

From the historic streets of Kolašin, through the shepherds and wild horses of Bjelasica, to the peaceful medieval walls of Morača Monastery, this is a journey into a Montenegro that feels authentic, scenic, and wonderfully off the beaten path.

And in winter, when the mountains are covered in snow, the entire experience takes on an entirely different - and truly magical - character.
