Day 01

Arrival in Arusha and Trek to Miriakamba Hut

  • Ascent: 1,500 m to 2,500 m (4,921 ft to 8,202 ft)

  • 08:00 AM - 09:00 AM | Pick-up and drive to the park

    • Pick-up from your accommodation in Arusha/Moshi and drive to Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park.

  • 09:00 AM - 10:00 AM | Park registration and crew briefing

    • Complete entrance formalities and meet your mountain guide, cook, porters, and armed park ranger.

  • 10:00 AM - 01:00 PM | Wildlife walking safari trek

    • Begin trekking through open grasslands. Experience a guided walking safari and get up close to giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and colobus monkeys.

  • 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM | Picnic lunch at Fig Tree Arch

    • Stop for a packed lunch under the famous Arched Fig Tree, a natural tree formation big enough for a vehicle or safari group to walk through.

  • 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM | Trek to Miriakamba Hut

    • Hike through the lush montane forest zone, passing Maio Waterfalls along the way.

  • 04:00 PM - 07:00 PM | Relaxation and dinner

    • Arrive at Miriakamba Hut. Enjoy hot tea, snacks, and a warm dinner while taking in views of the Ash Cone. Overnight at Miriakamba Hut.

Day 02

Climb to Saddle Hut and Acclimatize on Little Meru

  • 08:00 AM - 11:30 AM | Climb through heather and moorland zone

    • Begin a steep ascent along wooden steps through giant heather vegetation. Stop at Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Ridge).

  • 12:00 PM - 02:00 PM | Arrival at Saddle Hut and hot lunch

    • Reach Saddle Hut, nestled in the col between Mount Meru and Little Meru. Settle into your rooms and enjoy a freshly cooked lunch.

  • 03:30 PM - 05:30 PM | Acclimatization hike to Little Meru Peak (3,820 m)

    • Take a 1.5-hour acclimatization walk up to Little Meru. Enjoy dramatic views of Arusha National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro in the afternoon light.

  • 06:00 PM - 08:00 PM | Early dinner and gear preparation

    • Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner. Pack your summit day bag and go to sleep by 08:00 PM to rest for the midnight summit attempt.

Midnight Summit Push to Socialist Peak and Descent

  • Ascent: 3,570 m to 4,566 m (11,712 ft to 14,980 ft)

  • Descent: 4,566 m to 2,500 m (14,980 ft to 8,202 ft)

  • Hike Time: 10-12 hours total | Distance: ~18 km

  • 00:30 AM - 01:30 AM | Midnight wake-up and light snack

    • Wake up for warm tea or coffee and biscuits. Put on warm layers, headlamps, and winter gear.

  • 01:30 AM - 06:00 AM | Night push via Rhino and Cobra Points

    • Hike steeply up through volcanic ash and rocky ridges to Rhino Point (3,820 m). Continue along the narrow crater rim path past Cobra Point (4,350 m).

  • 06:00 AM - 07:00 AM | Summit at Socialist Peak (4,566 m)

    • Reach the summit of Mount Meru right at sunrise. Witness the sun rising over Mount Kilimanjaro and look down into Meru's massive crater ash cone.

  • 07:00 AM - 10:30 AM | Descent to Saddle Hut

    • Trek back down the crater rim ridge to Saddle Hut.

  • 10:30 AM - 01:00 PM | Brunch and rest

    • Enjoy a hot brunch or lunch at Saddle Hut and rest for 1-2 hours.

  • 01:00 PM - 04:00 PM | Hike down to Miriakamba Hut

    • Continue your descent through the heather zone to Miriakamba Hut.

  • 06:30 PM | Dinner and overnight stay

    • Enjoy a well-earned dinner and overnight stay at Miriakamba Hut.

Final Descent to Momella Gate and Return to Arusha

  • 08:00 AM - 09:00 AM | Breakfast and crew tipping ceremony

    • Final breakfast at Miriakamba Hut followed by a traditional celebration and tipping ceremony with your guides, cook, and porters.

  • 09:00 AM - 11:30 AM | Final game walk descent

    • Descend via the Southern or Jeep Route through open grasslands and acacia woodlands. Enjoy your final chances to spot giraffes, zebras, and monkeys.

  • 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM | Arrival at Momella Gate and certificate award

    • Reach Momella Gate and receive your official Mount Meru summit certificate from the national park authority.

  • 12:30 PM - 02:00 PM | Return transfer to Arusha / airport

    • Board your transport back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
