Patan and Bhaktapur Medieval Heritage Tour

  • Patan Durbar Square: The tour starts here. Temples line the square in stone and carved wood, much of it original work from the Malla era.

  • Medieval royal courtyards: Just off the square are Patan's inner courtyards, once reserved for royal use. Carved wooden windows let light into rooms that have stood for five hundred years.

  • Golden Temple: A short walk from the square, this Buddhist monastery has a gilded copper facade. It's an active site, where locals turn the prayer wheels and light incense every day.

  • Bhaktapur Durbar Square: About 40 minutes by car from Patan, this square holds palace buildings and temples from the Malla period, still standing close to how they were built.

  • Taumadhi Square and Nyatapola Temple: Nyatapola rises five tiers above the square as Nepal's tallest pagoda-style temple, with pairs of stone guardian figures on each level.

  • Lunch break: Eat in Bhaktapur and try Juju Dhau, a thick set curd served in small clay pots and made only in this part of the valley.

  • Pottery Square: Potters here still work by hand on foot-powered wheels. Rows of unfired pots dry in the open sun across the square.

  • Dattatraya Square: The tour ends in this quieter corner of Bhaktapur, lined with old temples and traditional Newar houses.
