Day 02

Journey East to Mpumalanga and Graskop

  • Departure: 06h30

  • Distance: 385 km

  • Travel: Departing from Johannesburg, we head east towards Mpumalanga.

  • Overnight: We spend the night in the town of Graskop, a small forestry town situated on the Drakensberg Escarpment at the start of the Panorama Route and the gateway to Kruger National Park.

Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon Views

  • Scenic drive: This morning, we begin with a scenic drive along the Panorama Route, arguably one of the most beautiful destinations in South Africa.

  • Stop: We stop at Bourke's Luck Potholes to view these spectacular rock formations, formed eons ago by erosion.

  • Viewpoint: Then, marvel at the vast expanse of Blyde River Canyon, where towering cliffs and lush landscapes create an awe-inspiring spectacle.

Full-Day Kruger National Park Safari

  • Game drive: Today is spent on a full-day open vehicle game drive in Kruger National Park, where you will have the chance to encounter the wildlife of Africa in our comfortable 4x4 open vehicle.

Into the Kingdom of Eswatini

  • Border crossing: Today, we cross the border into the mountainous Kingdom of Eswatini, led by King Mswati III and one of three monarchies in Africa.

  • Culture: You will explore the traditions and discover the culture of which the Swazis are so proud.

  • Stay: We spend two nights in the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Eswatini's pioneer conservation area situated in the 'Valley of Heaven'.

  • Guided walk: Apart from abundant birdlife, there are a number of animal species to be seen, including hippo, giraffe, zebra, and a variety of antelope, which we hope to spot on a guided walk in the afternoon.

Swazi Cultural Experience at a Chief's Homestead

  • Visit: Today, we visit the Umphakatsi Chief's homestead for an interactive experience where you will get to try your hand at grinding maize and plaiting mountain grass, or join the children in Swazi song and dance.

  • Food: A taste of local food is offered, but forget about your cutlery and try it the Swazi way... with your hands!

Return to South Africa and St Lucia

  • Craft market: After visiting a craft market en route, we re-enter South Africa via Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Sani Pass 4x4 Excursion into Lesotho

  • 4x4 excursion: Today, join a guided 4x4 excursion up the legendary Sani Pass into Lesotho, navigating challenging terrain with expert guidance.

  • Highest pub: At the summit, savour a drink and soak in the breathtaking mountain views at the highest pub in Africa, nestled amidst the clouds.

  • Basotho village: After lunch, you visit a Basotho village and interact with the local Basotho folk, who are independent but friendly inhabitants living a harsh existence in this rugged land.

  • Return: You wind down the Sani Pass after this cultural experience and arrive back in Underberg between 16h00-16h30, depending on the wildlife spotted along the way.

Over the Outeniqua Mountains to Oudtshoorn

  • Travel: We continue our journey, travelling over the Outeniqua Mountains into the Little Karoo and arriving in the town of Oudtshoorn.

  • Activity: We embark on an ostrich farm tour to learn about these fascinating birds before continuing to the famous Cango Caves, with their impressive ancient stalagmites and stalactites.

Cape Peninsula Tour and Boulders Beach

  • Cape Peninsula tour: Today, we explore the many attractions the 'Mother City' has to offer on a Cape Peninsula tour.

  • Route: Travelling along the Atlantic Seaboard via Sea Point, Clifton, and Camps Bay, we stop at Maiden Cove lookout point before continuing to Hout Bay.

  • Optional: Here, you have the option to take a boat trip to Seal Island (seasonal and not included in the cost).

  • Scenic drive: We carry on over Chapman's Peak, one of the world's most breathtaking coastal drives, to Cape Point and the Good Hope Nature Reserve.

  • Simon's Town: In the afternoon, we travel on to Simon's Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture, a naval base, and a large penguin colony at the beautiful Boulders Beach.

Please note that the daily departure times are a guideline only and are subject to change due to seasonal variations, as well as unforeseen circumstances. The final decision rests with your guide, who will advise you what time you will be departing each day.

On the evening of Day 1, there will be a meeting presented by your guide at 18h00 at Southern Sun OR Tambo. It is imperative that all clients attend this meeting so as not to miss out on any critical information.

Whilst it is our every intention to adhere to the above-mentioned itinerary, there may occasionally be a need to make alterations in order to make the tour more enjoyable or practical. Therefore, please treat the itinerary as a guide only.

TRAVELLING TIMES AND DISTANCES: All travelling times are affected by road conditions, border crossings, detours, and weather conditions. Therefore, on certain days, travelling times may be longer than anticipated, especially where there is a lot of distance to be covered. Please keep in mind that the time it takes to travel 100 km in your home country is not equivalent to the time it takes to travel 100 km on African roads, so we encourage you to sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery Africa has to offer. Where possible, additional stops will be made to ensure your travelling comfort at all times.

VISAS: The onus is on the client to organise all visas required to visit South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho prior to departure.
