  • Activities: You must pay local operators directly on-site if you want to hire a local guide for a mokoro trip or book a seat on a Chobe River cruise boat.

What to bring

  • Neutral Colors: Pack khaki, beige, olive green, or grey. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract biting tsetse flies, and bright white, which scares wildlife.

  • Warm Layers: Early morning game drives in open 4x4s are freezing, dropping to 5°C/41°F in winter. Bring a windproof jacket, fleece, beanie, scarf, and lightweight gloves.

  • Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed sun hat, with a chin strap for windy drives, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

  • Shoes: Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes or light trainers. Heavy hiking boots are only necessary if you are doing dedicated walking safaris.

  • Camera & Zoom Lens: A camera with a 200 mm-400 mm telephoto lens is ideal for capturing distant wildlife and birds.

  • Binoculars: Essential for scanning the floodplains. Pack one pair per person if possible.

  • Power Bank: Electricity can be limited in remote campsites or solar-powered lodges. Bring a rugged external battery pack.

  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Vital for navigating unfenced camps safely after dark.

  • Insect Repellent: A high-strength spray containing DEET or Picaridin to guard against mosquitoes and tsetse flies.

  • Sunscreen & Lip Balm: High-SPF, reef-safe options are best for the harsh African sun.

  • Personal Medication: Bring a full supply of prescription medications, including your prescribed malaria prophylactics.

  • Wet Wipes & Hand Sanitizer: Essential for freshening up during dusty, multi-hour game drives.

Know before you go

  • Tourism Development Levy: All non-SADC international arrivals must pay a mandatory USD $30 Tourism Development Levy at ports of entry. Digital payment terminals accept card payments at all major borders and airports.

  • Increased Park Fees: The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) implemented a revised fee structure. International visitors now pay BWP 270 per day to enter Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve.

  • Children's Documents: If traveling with minors under 18, Botswana strictly requires an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents' details. If only one parent is traveling, a certified letter of consent from the absent parent is mandatory.

  • Malaria Risk: Both Moremi and the Chobe Riverfront are designated high-risk malaria zones, especially near water sources. Consult a travel clinic well in advance for prescription prophylactics, and carry bug spray containing DEET.

  • Unfenced Wildlife: Campsites and many lodges inside Moremi and Chobe are completely unfenced. Wild animals, including lions and hyenas, roam freely through camp layouts. Never leave your tent or room after dark without a guide, and always keep your tent zipped fully to the ground.

  • Tsetse Flies: Moremi hosts pockets of tsetse flies. Their bites are painful, and they are highly attracted to dark blue and black clothing. Stick to neutral tones like khaki, olive green, beige, or grey.

  • Chilly Mornings: While daytime safari temperatures are pleasantly warm, winter mornings from May to August drop dramatically to around 6°C (43°F). Open 4x4 vehicles create a severe wind-chill effect. Bring a heavy fleece, beanie, scarf, and gloves.

  • Digital Detox: Mobile network coverage vanishes completely once you enter the gates of Moremi or deep Chobe. Expect to be completely off-grid with no cellular signal or Wi-Fi for the duration of your park stay.
