The itinerary

Day 01

Arrival at Xakanaxa and First Safari Experience

Airport pick-up for Camp Xakanaxa is a seamless, fully hosted process handled directly at the bush airstrip.

Meeting Your Guide

  • The Location: Light aircraft flights do not land at major commercial hubs; they land directly inside the reserve at the Xakanaxa Airstrip.

  • The Welcome: Your professional Camp Xakanaxa safari guide will be waiting right at the edge of the runway as your plane engines shut down.

  • The Vehicle: You will immediately load your bags into an open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle.

  • The Route: You will fly via a light aircraft charter, typically operated by Safari Air, from Maun Airport (25 minutes) or Kasane Airport (60-80 minutes).

  • Airstrip Pick-up: You will land at the Xakanaxa Airstrip. A camp guide will meet you at the aircraft in an open 4x4 safari vehicle.

  • Final Transfer: Enjoy a 15 to 25-minute scenic road transfer, essentially a mini game drive, from the airstrip directly to the lodge.

  • Luggage Strict Constraint: You are strictly limited to 20 kg (44 lbs) per person. This weight must include all hand luggage and must be packed in soft-sided bags to fit inside the aircraft's pod.

Arrival by Road (Self-Drive)

  • The Route: Driving takes approximately 4 hours from Maun (approx. 140 km).

  • Vehicle Requirement: A heavy-duty 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is mandatory due to deep, loose sand and seasonal water crossings.

  • Park Gate Deadline: You must time your drive to arrive at the Moremi Game Reserve gate and check into camp before the strict official park closing hours at sunset. Driving inside the park after dark is forbidden.

Your First Afternoon Schedule

  • 14:00+: Arrive, receive a brief orientation, settle into your luxury tent, and relax during the midday siesta.

  • 15:00 (Winter) / 15:30 (Summer): High tea is served on the open-air patio.

  • 15:30 / 16:00: Depart for your first afternoon game drive or motorized boat safari.

Day 02

Land and Water Safaris in Moremi

Daily activities at Camp Xakanaxa focus entirely on taking advantage of its unique location inside the Moremi Game Reserve, offering a true year-round blend of both land and water safaris.

Land Safaris

  • Guided Game Drives: Done twice daily, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, in open-sided 4x4 vehicles. Tracks wind through mopane forests, riverine woodlands, and open acacia savannahs.

  • Predator Tracking: The area is famous for highly reliable sightings of lion prides, leopards, hyenas, and endangered African wild dogs.

  • Big Game: You will frequently encounter large herds of breeding elephants, Cape buffalo, giraffe, tsessebe, and the specialized water-loving red lechwe antelope.

Water Safaris

  • Motorized Powerboat Cruises: Navigate the deep channels and wide lagoons of the Okavango Delta using stable, hard-bottom aluminum boats equipped with shade roofs. These are highly rated for getting close to pods of hippos and massive Nile crocodiles.

  • Mokoro Excursions: Traditional, quiet dugout canoe trips steered by a professional poler. These allow you to glide silently through shallow, crystal-clear floodplains to see painted reed frogs and water lilies.

Specialist Bird Watching

  • The Experience: Regarded as one of Africa's premier birding destinations.

  • Key Sightings: Exceptional viewing of Pel's fishing owls, African fish eagles, and kingfishers.

  • Seasonal Breeding: Spring and summer months open up boat access to nearby permanent lagoon colonies where thousands of herons and storks nest.

Day 03

Final Morning Activity and Departure

  • 05:30 / 06:00 AM: Early morning wake-up call and a light continental breakfast.

  • 06:00 / 06:30 AM: Depart on your final morning activity, either a game drive or a boat cruise.

  • 10:00 AM: Return to camp to pack your bags and check out of your tent.

  • 10:30 AM: Settle your final open bar or curio shop tab, followed by a full brunch.

Onward Air Transfers

  • Schedule Finalization: Flight times are managed by Safari Air and are finalized the afternoon before you depart. Camp managers will brief you on your precise departure time during dinner.

  • Airstrip Transit: You will take a 25-minute 4x4 road transfer back to the Xakanaxa Airstrip to catch your light aircraft.

  • Connecting Flights: Flights heading to Kasane or Victoria Falls depart early to meet standard road transfer slots. If your flight is early, your morning game drive may be shortened.

  • Air Transfers: Light aircraft charter flights from Maun or Kasane to the Xakanaxa Airstrip, unless pre-bundled into a specific travel agency package.

What to bring

  • Clothing (Neutral Earth Tones)

  • Colors to Pack: Khaki, olive green, beige, tan, and brown.

  • Colors to Avoid: White (gets dirty instantly), black and dark blue (attract biting tsetse flies), and bright colors (scare wildlife). Camouflage patterns are illegal for civilians in Botswana.

  • Layering Essentials: 3-4 lightweight, long-sleeved safari shirts (for protection from sun and insects) and 2-3 pairs of durable long pants.

  • Winter Safaris (May-August): Heavy windproof jacket, fleece layers, thermal underwear, beanie, scarf, and warm gloves. Open-vehicle drives and boat cruises are freezing in the early mornings.

  • Summer Safaris (September-April): Lightweight shorts, T-shirts, and swimwear for the lodge pools.

Know before you go

  • Health & Safety

  • Malaria Zone: The Okavango Delta is a high-risk malaria area. Consult a travel clinic well in advance for prescription prophylactics, pack effective insect repellent, and wear long sleeves and pants for evening dinners.

  • Unfenced Wilderness: The camp grounds are completely unfenced to wildlife. Hippos, elephants, buffalo, and predators roam freely through the camp under solar canopies and boardwalks. You must never walk alone at night; a camp escort must accompany you to and from your tent.

  • Packing & Luggage Limitations

  • Strict Soft Luggage Only: Charter planes operated by Safari Air enforce a rigid maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs) per person, which must include your hand luggage. Rolling suitcases with hard plastic shells or rigid pull-out handles are prohibited because they cannot fit into aircraft pods.

  • Free Daily Laundry: Because Camp Xakanaxa provides a complimentary same-day laundry service, you only need to pack roughly three days' worth of clothing.

  • Safari Dress Code: Avoid bright colors, white, and camouflage clothing, which is illegal for civilians in several African countries. Pack neutral earth tones like khaki, olive green, and beige.
