Day 01

Arrival - Maun

For Fly-In Guests (Most Common)

If you are booking a standard fly-in safari package, your starting point is either Maun Airport (MUB) or Kasane Airport (BBK).

  • The Gateway: Maun Airport serves as the primary gateway to the Okavango Delta and is the most popular starting point.

  • The Meetup: You will meet the Desert & Delta Safaris or Safari Air representative directly inside the airport terminal after clearing customs.

  • The Flight: From there, you step onto a light aircraft scheduled charter flight for a 25-minute flight from Maun (or an 80-minute flight from Kasane) directly to the Xakanaxa airstripTo arrive at Camp Xakanaxa from your current location in Kasane, Botswana, you have two main travel options depending on your budget and preferred travel style:

Option 1: By Air (Recommended)

This is the fastest, safest, and most convenient way to travel across the Delta terrain.

  • Flight Time: Approximately 70 to 80 minutes via a light aircraft charter flight.

  • Route: Fly from Kasane Airport (BBK) directly to the private Xakanaxa Airstrip.

  • Final Transfer: A lodge representative will meet you at the airstrip in an open 4x4 safari vehicle for a 25-minute scenic transfer to the main camp.

Day 02

Activities

Land Activities: Open 4x4 Game Drives

Game drives explore the diverse habitats of the Moremi Game Reserve, covering riverine forests, open savannah, and mopane woodlands.

  • Vehicles: Open-sided, tiered 4x4 safari vehicles offering unobstructed views and photography angles.

  • Key Wildlife: Frequent sightings of the "Big Five" (excluding rhino, which are highly elusive), including large herds of elephant and buffalo, lion prides, leopard, hyena, and cheetah. [1]

  • Specialty Sightings: The Xakanaxa region is renowned for hosting the endangered African wild dog (painted wolf), which often den or hunt in the area.

Water Activities: Motorized Boat Safaris

Unlike camps located on seasonal floodplains, Xakanaxa's deep-water access allows for boating even during the dry summer months.

  • Vessels: Safe, 8-seater motorized powerboats designed to navigate narrow channels.

  • The Experience: Cruises travel deep into the serpentine waterways of the Okavango Delta, visiting vast papyrus-fringed lagoons where you can see hippo pods, large crocodiles, and elephants swimming between islands.

  • Birdwatching: Regarded as one of Africa's premier birding destinations. You can spot rare species like the Pel's fishing owl, African fish eagle, wattled crane, and various kingfishers

Sunset Sundowners & Bush Breaks

Every afternoon activity includes a traditional safari "sundowner." Your guide will find a scenic, safe spot in the bush or on a lagoon deck to set up a mobile bar with drinks and snacks so you can watch the sunset over the Delta.

Day 03

Departure

By Air (Recommended)

This is the standard departure method for fly-in safari itineraries.

  • The Process: A lodge representative will transfer you via an open 4x4 vehicle to the private Xakanaxa Airstrip (25 minutes).

  • Flight Time: A scheduled light aircraft charter flight takes 25 minutes to Maun Airport (MUB) or 70 to 80 minutes to Kasane Airport (BBK).

  • Connecting Outbound: Charter flights are strictly timed to arrive at Maun or Kasane airports to give you comfortable buffer windows before your scheduled commercial international departures (e.g., flights to Johannesburg or Cape Town).

  • Key Departure Considerations

    • Standard Check-Out Time: Generally between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, immediately following your morning safari activity and brunch.

    • Luggage Reminder: The strict 15 kg (33 lbs) soft-sided luggage limit remains mandatory for all outbound light aircraft charter flights.

    • Park Fees: If you are a self-driver, ensure your vehicle park entry permits are valid for your day of exit at the gate, or pay any outstanding daily fees at the North/South gate offices upon departure

What to bring

Safari Clothing (Neutral Tones Only)

  • Laundry is done daily at the camp (included in your rate), so you only need to pack enough outfits for 3 to 4 days.

  • The Color Rule: Stick to khaki, olive green, beige, or brown. Avoid bright white (makes you highly visible to animals), avoid black and dark blue (strongly attracts biting tsetse flies), and avoid military camouflage (illegal for civilians in Botswana).

  • Layering System: Temperatures fluctuate drastically. Winter mornings can drop to 6°C (43°F), while afternoons reach 35°C (95°F). Pack 3 lightweight t-shirts, 2 long-sleeved safari shirts (for sun and bug protection), 2 pairs of lightweight trousers, and 2 pairs of shorts.

  • Warm Wear: A heavy windbreaker or fleece jacket, a warm beanie, and a scarf for early morning open-top game drives and boat safaris.

  • Footwear: 1 pair of sturdy, broken-in trail shoes or lightweight hiking boots (heavy combat boots are unnecessary), plus 1 pair of sandals or flip-flops for lounging around the pool and tent decks.

Know before you go

  • Health & Medical: High-Risk Malaria Zone

    • Malaria Risk: High risk year-round. The risk peaks during the wet summer months (November to April), but because Xakanaxa sits on permanent, deep-water channels, mosquitoes remain present through the winter.

    • Prevention: Prophylaxis medication, such as Malarone or Doxycycline, is strongly recommended. Bring insect repellents containing at least 30% DEET, and wear long-sleeved clothing during evening dining and night routines.

    • Water Safety: The lagoon and surrounding delta waterways contain Bilharzia (Schistosomiasis). Swimming or wading in any natural water channel or lagoon is strictly forbidden.

    • Luggage Constraints: Strict Soft-Side Limits

      • Weight Limit: Exactly 15 kg (33 lbs) per person total, inclusive of hand luggage and camera gear.

      • Structure: Bags must be completely soft-sided duffels with no rigid frames, wheels, or pull-out handles. Light aircraft cargo pods cannot physically accommodate hard suitcases.

  • Minimum Age: Children under 6 years old are not permitted at the lodge.

    • Private Activity Mandate: Families traveling with children aged 6 to 11 years old must pay an additional surcharge for a private safari vehicle and boat. They are not permitted to join standard communal group game drives or water safaris for safety and group comfort.

  • Wildlife & Safety Boundaries

  • Unfenced Camp: The property is entirely unfenced. Large dangerous game, including elephants, hippos, hyenas, and lions, regularly move directly through the camp grounds and tent pathways.

  • Night Escorts: Walking alone after dark is strictly prohibited. Guests must be escorted to and from their tents for dinner by armed guides or camp staff.
