Full-Day Safari in Kaziikini Concession

Wake up at 05:00 am and depart for the famous Kaziikini Concession at 06:00 am. It takes roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the park entrance. Travel northeast from Maun, first along a fine, full-width tar road to Shorobe, then continue on a wide gravel road, where a veterinary control fence is encountered.

With such a wide variety of vegetation comes a diverse spectrum of wildlife. Huge herds of impala and tsessebe are found in the area, while in the dry season large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, elephant, and zebra flock into the reserve from the Kalahari in search of food and water.

Kaziikini is a wilderness paradise with great game viewing throughout the year.

Spend the day game viewing with our knowledgeable guides, enjoy drinks and a tasty lunch, and then return to Maun. After lunch, take a slow game drive out of the park, where you will see many animals before arriving in Maun at 17:00 hours.

What to bring

  • Headlamp & Flashlight: The camp relies on solar power and has limited lighting at night. Bring a high-lumens headlamp with spare batteries.
  • High-Capacity Power Bank: Power outlets are limited or restricted to central areas. Bring a solar or high-capacity power bank to keep cameras and phones charged.
  • Binoculars: Essential for spotting wildlife in dense bush tracks and during walking safaris.
  • Off-Line Navigation/GPS: Download offline maps (like Tracks4Africa or Google Maps) before leaving Maun. Cellular signal in the concession is weak to non-existent.
  • Neutral Clothing: Pack lightweight clothing in khaki, beige, brown, or olive green. Strictly avoid bright colors and white (which scares wildlife on walking safaris) and dark blue or black (which attracts biting tsetse flies).
  • Sturdy Closed-Toe Shoes: Thick-soled hiking boots or trail sneakers are non-negotiable for walking safaris to protect against thorns, scorpions, and uneven terrain.
  • Warm Layers: Open 4x4 night drives get exceptionally cold. Bring a windproof jacket, fleece, beanie, and a scarf.

Know before you go

  • Neutral Layers: Mornings and late afternoons are chilly in open safari vehicles, while midday gets very hot. Wear layers in khaki, green, or beige.
  • Sun & Insect Protection: Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and insect repellent containing DEET.
  • Footwear: Closed-toe shoes or light sneakers are highly recommended over sandals due to dust and insects.
  • Accepted Currencies: Local currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP), but US Dollars (USD) and South African Rand (ZAR) are widely accepted by lodges and tour operators.
  • Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is entirely voluntary but highly appreciated. A standard guideline is roughly $10-$15 USD per day for your safari guide.
