Know before you go

1. Dress Code (Very Important!)
For Shamakhi (Mosque visit): We will visit the historic Juma Mosque. Men should avoid short shorts, and women should have their shoulders and knees covered. It is highly recommended for women to bring a light scarf to cover their heads. Though the mosque sometimes provides them, having your own is much more comfortable.
For Gabala (Mountains & Lake): Bring sporty, comfortable clothes and sneakers with good grip. No heels or slippery shoes, as you'll be walking around Lake Nohur and boarding cable cars at Tufandag.
Layers: Gabala is up in the mountains. Even if Baku is hot, it can get breezy and cool at the top of the Tufandag cable cars, so bring a light jacket or hoodie.
2. Road & Motion Sickness
The road includes the Agsu Pass, which has gorgeous views but very winding, serpentine mountain roads. If anyone in your group gets motion sickness easily, they should definitely take a pill (Dramamine or similar) 30 minutes before departure.
3. Cash for Roadside Goodies
While Tufandag Resort and big restaurants accept cards, you will definitely want cash (AZN) for the road. The route between Shamakhi and Gabala is famous for local vendors selling fresh mountain honey, forest berries, local wines, and hot tandir bread right by the roadside. They only accept cash.
4. Sun & Rain Protection
The mountain sun at Tufandag (over 1,600+ meters) is very strong. Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must to avoid getting burned.
Mountain weather is unpredictable; packing a small, compact umbrella or raincoat is always a smart move.
