The route
The fine print
Neutral colors: Pack khaki, olive green, beige, and tan clothing. Avoid bright colors that scare wildlife, and strictly avoid dark blue and black, which actively attract biting tsetse flies.
Warm morning layers: A windproof jacket, fleece, beanie, scarf, and lightweight gloves are mandatory for early-morning open 4x4 game drives.
Lightweight daywear: Breathable, long-sleeved linen or cotton shirts and convertible zip-off trousers protect against the midday sun and brush.
Sturdy footwear: Comfortable, closed-toe trail shoes or lightweight hiking boots with thick socks for guided bush walks. Heavy boots are unnecessary.
Malaria prophylaxis: Bring your prescribed preventative pills and a high-concentration DEET or Picaridin insect repellent for ankles and wrists at dusk.
Sun shielding: A wide-brimmed safari hat with a chin strap (to stop it blowing off in open vehicles), polarized sunglasses, and SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Personal first-aid: Anti-diarrheal medication, rehydration sachets, antihistamines for bug bites, painkillers, eye drops (for dust), and any chronic prescriptions.
Binoculars: A personal pair of 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars is highly recommended. You will miss a massive percentage of birdlife and distant predator action without them.
Dust protection: Lightweight dry bags or zip-lock bags to seal your camera, lenses, and phone away from the fine, pervasive Kalahari dust.
Water & filtration: At least 5 liters of drinking water per person, per day. Bring a heavy-duty physical water filter or purification tablets for emergency back-up.
Cash (BWP): Cash in Botswana Pula to pay the local Khwai Community Trust entrance/camping fees or to tip local mokoro polers and community guides. Credit card machines rarely have connectivity here.
Heavy-duty trash bags: Everything you pack in must be packed out. You need thick, wildlife-proof bags to seal garbage inside your vehicle so hyenas do not tear it apart.
Lighting: A powerful headlamp or torch with spare batteries. Campsites are pitch black, and you must check your surroundings for wild animals before stepping out of a tent or vehicle at night.
Power banks: Bring high-capacity portable power banks. Even luxury camps operating on solar may limit when you can plug into wall outlets.
Free transit, paid camping: Passing through the Khwai Community Concession along the main public transit route is free. However, if you enter the neighboring Moremi Game Reserve (via North Gate bridge), you must pay daily Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) entry fees.
Unfenced wild campsites: Campsites within the community concession (like Magotho) are entirely wild and unfenced. Predators like hyenas, elephants, and lions wander freely through the camps at night. Never walk away from your vehicle or tent after dark without a powerful flashlight, and never leave food or trash outside, as it heavily attracts wildlife.
Malaria risk: The Okavango Delta is a malaria-endemic area, especially near permanent water sources like the Khwai River. Pack high-quality insect repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk, and consult a doctor regarding preventative malaria medication before your trip.
