What to bring

  • Neutral Colors: Pack lightweight clothing in khaki, tan, olive green, or brown. Avoid bright whites, dark blues, and blacks, which attract biting tsetse flies.
  • Warm Layers: Early morning game drives in open 4x4 vehicles are freezing. Bring a windproof jacket, fleece, beanie, and gloves.
  • Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed safari hat with a chin strap, to prevent it from blowing off on fast-moving safari boats, and polarized sunglasses.
  • Telephoto Camera Lens: Animals can be close, but a lens with at least 200mm-400mm focal length is crucial for bird photography and riverbank action.
  • Binoculars: A pair of 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars is highly recommended for scanning the far riverbanks.
  • Dust Protection: Bring zip-top bags or a tight camera wrap to protect your gear from the fine, dry sand kicked up on the riverfront tracks.
  • Power Adapter: Botswana primarily uses Type G (British three-pin) and Type M (South African large three-pin) plugs. Bring a universal adapter.

Know before you go

  • Kaza UniVisa: If you plan to visit nearby Victoria Falls, purchase a KAZA UniVisa ($50 USD) upon arrival at Kasane Airport or the land borders. This allows unlimited cross-border travel between Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia for up to 30 days.
  • Children's Documentation: Botswana strictly enforces anti-trafficking laws. Minors under 18 must travel with a certified Unabridged Birth Certificate showing both parents' details, alongside valid passports.
  • Malaria Risk: The Chobe River region is a high-risk malaria zone, especially during the rainy season (November to April). Consult a physician ahead of time for appropriate prophylactic pills, and pack insect repellent containing at least 30% DEET.
  • Tap Water: While tap water in Kasane town is chemically treated, it can cause stomach upset for international travelers. Stick to bottled, filtered, or purified water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
  • Unfenced Wilderness: Lodges and campsites along the riverfront are completely unfenced. Wild animals - including elephants, hyenas, and hippos - frequently wander through properties at night. Never walk alone after dark.
