Arrival in Antananarivo

You've been looking forward to this exciting moment when your safari starts, and so have we. We'll explain everything you need to know to get going and answer any questions you may have. Once all of that is done, all that's left is to go out and enjoy this journey of a lifetime together.

Antananarivo is a city of many facets. Sprawling attractively across the wooded ridges and swampy valleys of the island's central highlands, this agreeable city has effectively served as the Malagasy capital since it was captured by King Andrianjaka of Imerina in the early 17th century. Today, Antananarivo, or Tana for short, hosts a wealth of historic buildings, complemented by buzzing local markets, several attractive parks and green spaces, and a lively cultural mix of indigenous, French, and other influences.

Antananarivo City Tour and Lemurs' Park

Antananarivo, the vibrant capital of Madagascar, is a fascinating blend of history, culture, and modern Malagasy life. Built across a series of hills, the city offers panoramic views, colorful markets, historic architecture, and lively neighborhoods. Visitors can explore the royal heritage of the former Merina Kingdom, discover local crafts and cuisine, and experience the unique atmosphere of Madagascar's largest city. As the gateway to the island's diverse landscapes and wildlife, Antananarivo provides an authentic introduction to Malagasy culture and traditions.

  • Activity: All day - We'll help you get to know Antananarivo in the best way possible by embarking on our sightseeing activity.
  • Activity: After breakfast, you will be met by your driver-guide and proceed directly to Lemurs' Park (approximately 25 km from the city), where you will observe several lemur species in a semi-natural environment.
  • Activity: After the visit, return to Antananarivo for a panoramic viewpoint over the city, followed by a guided visit to the Queen's Palace (Rova of Antananarivo), one of the country's most significant historical landmarks.
  • Lunch: Around 1:00 PM - at a local restaurant in the city.
  • Transfer: After lunch, transfer back to your hotel, with an optional short stop at Analakely Market, depending on time and interest.

Day 03

Flight to Morondava and Baobab Sunset

The remote and sleepy port of Morondava is one of the larger towns set along Madagascar's tropical west coast. Best known as the gateway to scenic and wildlife destinations further afield, it is also an attractive place in its own right, thanks to its memorable location between a sandy Indian Ocean beach and the forest-fringed mouth of the Morondava River.

Day 04

Kirindy Forest Wildlife Excursion

There's plenty of wildlife at Kirindy Forest. Nocturnal species often seen in this private reserve include the fossa, Madagascar's largest carnivore, Madame Berthe's mouse lemur, the world's smallest primate, and the Malagasy giant jumping rat. By day, you can expect to encounter a good variety of lemurs, including the iconic Verreaux's sifaka, as well as birds associated with dry forests.

Return to Antananarivo and Drive to Lake Mantasoa

Lake Mantasoa is a peaceful and scenic destination nestled in Madagascar's central highlands, approximately 60 km east of Antananarivo. Surrounded by rolling hills, pine forests, and picturesque countryside, the lake offers a tranquil setting ideal for relaxation and nature appreciation. Visitors can enjoy beautiful landscapes, boat excursions, horseback riding, and cultural discoveries in the surrounding villages. Rich in history and natural beauty, Lake Mantasoa provides a refreshing escape from the bustle of the capital and a glimpse into the charm of Madagascar's highland region.

Day 06

Lake Mantasoa, Nosy Soa Park and Andasibe

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is possibly our favorite wildlife-viewing destination anywhere in Madagascar, and we think you'll love it too. This accessible park is the last major stronghold for the critically endangered indri, a large stumpy-tailed lemur notable for its panda-like coat and eerie far-carrying call. Other lemurs are plentiful here, along with a varied selection of forest birds, chameleons, and colorful frogs.

Analamazaotra Reserve and Vakona Visit

The park is home to a high diversity of lemurs, including the iconic Indri indri, diademed sifaka, brown lemurs, and bamboo lemurs, while birdwatchers can spot endemic species such as the Madagascar blue pigeon, vangas, and paradise flycatchers. Its dense, humid rainforest, with towering trees, moss-covered trunks, and rare orchids and ferns, provides an authentic tropical experience. Visitors can enjoy night walks to encounter nocturnal species like mouse lemurs, chameleons, and frogs. The park is divided into two distinct areas: Andasibe (Analamazaotra), which is easily accessible and famous for indri calls, and Mantadia, which offers rugged trails and untouched wilderness.

  • Hike: This hike will take you about 4 hours with a local guide who knows the area very well.
  • Activity: You'll get back after the visit to have lunch and drive to Vakona Private Reserve.
  • Activity: After the visit, you'll go back to your hotel, take a rest, and be ready for the evening walk.

Flight to Nosy Be

Nosy Be offers everything you could hope for in an Indian Ocean beach destination. Situated a short distance off the Malagasy mainland, this volcanically formed island is lined with gorgeous palm-shaded tropical beaches. Inland, you'll find picturesque crater lakes, traditional Sakalava villages, aromatic ylang-ylang plantations, and tangled rainforests inhabited by lovable lemurs. Offshore, the calm waters are hemmed in by coral reefs alive with all manner of marine creatures. What's more, this enviable diversity is complemented by a superb selection of resorts and restaurants catering to all tastes and budgets.

Boat Trip to Nosy Iranja

Welcome to paradise. We're not kidding: the island of Nosy Iranja is truly the stuff of Indian Ocean beach escape fantasies. Comprising two small forested islets linked by a narrow sandbar, it is barely 3 km/1.9 mi long in total, but the white palm-shaded beaches are absolutely idyllic. Green turtles and other marine wildlife are often seen in the surrounding turquoise shallows.

  • Activity: After today's boat trip to this remote island paradise, we're sure you'll agree.
