With a personal guide leading the way, look out for a wide variety of water birds, including pelicans, ibis, storks, and other rare species found in the sanctuary. Along the way, you’ll also gain insight into the communities that live on the lake, making this a rewarding experience for travellers interested in wildlife, nature, and everyday life in Cambodia.

Floating Village

A floating village on the northern reaches of the Tonle Sap, Mechrey is not the loveliest spot in the world, but it offers some great bird-spotting opportunities, as well as a chance to witness a unique way of life for those who live on the lake. The establishment of initiatives such as the one at Mechrey can’t strictly be called ecotourism, although it does give people alternatives to fishing as a source of income. But they are an opportunity to witness an extraordinary way of life that is also under threat, and to clock up some lovely birdlife. The tour itself starts off in a pretty smelly artificial canal which you travel along for about a kilometer until the waterway opens out on to the main river and the floating village.

Tonle Sap Lake

Tonlé Sap is a lake in the northwest of Cambodia. It belongs to the Mekong River system. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world, designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997 due to its high biodiversity

Prek Toal Birds Sanctuary

Prek Toal is one of three biospheres on the Tonlé Sap lake, and this stunning bird sanctuary makes it the most worthwhile and straightforward of the three to visit. It’s an ornithologist’s fantasy, with a significant number of rare breeds gathered in one small area, including the huge lesser and greater adjutant storks, the milky stork and the spot-billed pelican. Even the uninitiated will be impressed, as these birds have a huge wingspan and build enormous nests.

Tonlé Sap Biosphere Reserve

The Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve is located in the Northeast of Cambodia. It includes the Tonle Sap Lake, the most extensive freshwater lake in South-East Asia, which is located in the centre of the Tonle Sap Basin. It is surrounded by the Dong Rek Mountains to the north, the Cardamom Mountains to the southwest, and other small hills to the east that separate the basin from the Mekong River

Prek Toal Floating Village

Prek Toal is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Southeast Asia located on the great Tonle Sap Lake. On this full day excursion, you will not only take a chance to explore the protected biosphere reserve with a significant number of rare water birds but also get a glimpse of local life on floating villages and contribute your effort to support local children on floating schools and community Centre. Embark on this voyage and have a unique experience in your Cambodia holiday.
