Day 01

Chavín de Huántar Archaeological Excursion

  • Have breakfast at the hotel.

  • Depart at 8 am from our private bus station, heading to the millenarian capital of archaeology - Chavín de Huántar.

  • Drive through the south side of Huaraz, passing by the villages of Recuay at 3300 masl. Cross the Santa River to the left side of the typical town of Huacapampa.

  • Continue past eucalyptus trees and sheepherder villages. Travel along the highlands full of pastures and straw-covered landscapes through a small valley, and visit Querococha Lake at 3980 masl.

  • Stop for photos of the beautiful landscape.

  • Continue up to the highest pass at Tunnel de Cahuish at 4500 masl, the critical point of the hydrographical division where water on the west side flows to the Pacific Ocean and water on the east side flows to the Atlantic Ocean. The ruins are located next to the modern district of Chavín.

  • Arrive at 1 pm and go directly to a restaurant for lunch until 2 pm.

  • Then enter the castle of Chavín for a guided tour of about two hours.

  • Inside the ruins, visit many labyrinthine rooms, and in one of the main buildings see the Lanzón, the Chavín, and a large carved stone remain from the Pre-Inkas. There are many places and features to visit and observe, such as plazas, caves, the main porch, and many others.

  • The guided tour finishes around 4 pm. Depart for a non-stop drive back to Huaraz for about 3 hours by the same route.

  • Arrive around 7 pm directly at our bus station in Huaraz.
