Located at 3850 masl, these turquoise glacial lakes fed by Huascarán and Huandoy are a popular visit thanks to their easy access from Huaraz. Along the way, pass through typical Peruvian villages, learn about the tragic history of Yungay, and enjoy views of the beautiful snow-capped peaks of the region.

Yungay holds a devastating history - on 31st May 1970 at 3:20 pm, a 7-degree earthquake struck, causing pieces of Huascarán's north peak to break off and trigger a huge avalanche of mud and ice that destroyed Yungay province in 6 seconds.

Llanganuco Lakes and Yungay Day Tour

  • After breakfast, depart at 8 am, first to the private tour bus station and then north toward the Llanganuco Lakes, located between the mountains of Huascarán and Huandoy. The tour starts at 3100 masl in Huaraz.

  • Pass by several typical Peruvian villages such as Monterrey, Paltay, Tarica, Jangas, Yungar, and Anta. Enjoy views of the beautiful snow-capped mountains of Huandoy, Huascarán, Hualcán, Copa, and others, with opportunities to take photos from various viewpoints along the way.

A guided visit here will take around 45 minutes.
