Arrive at the first hut in Mandara for dinner and overnight stay.
An alternative is to simply rest and relax in the beautiful forest around the camp.
-
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
First part of the walk is a steep ascent through the forest, but the path soon opens out into moorland. On a clear day, enjoy the great views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon. Relax and enjoy the stunning scenery around the camp.
4-6 hours walking.
-
Day 3: Mawenzi Hut
Walk towards the Mawenzi hut, passing by Zebra Rocks. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatisation.
Overnight stay at the hut.
-
Day 4: Horombo to Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
Climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. These 6-7 hours of walking will be taken at a slow pace until Kibo Hut (4,700m). There is no running water at Kibo Hut.
Spend the remainder of the day relaxing in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night.
4-6 hours walking.
-
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness.
Begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree through some well-graded zig-zags, leading to the rim of the main crater, Gillman’s (5,685 meters). Rest there for a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi.
Continue across the snow around the rim for a further 2 hrs for the final trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Africa’s highest point.
After spending some time atop the peak, descend down and stop by at Kibo Hut for some refreshment.
After this, continue to descend to reach Horombo Hut.
-
Day 6: Horombo to Marangu Gate & Departure
On the last day of your tour, descend past Mandara Hut to Marangu National Park Gate, where successful climbers will receive their summit certificates.
