5-Day Walking Safari in Chyulu Hills with Leviathan Cave

• Depart from Nairobi around 08:00 am and proceed towards Kibwezi on a 3-hour drive down Mombasa Road.

• At Kibwezi, leave the tarmac and take a dirt road - probably an optimistic term for it - for the 30 km ride to where the walking tour starts towards the caves.

• Have lunch comprising cold cuts, salads, bread and cheese, with a cold beer or soft drink.

• After lunch, commence a 1-hour walk to the entrance of the caves.

• Spend the afternoon exploring the caves.

• Explore sections of Leviathan, one of the longest lava tube caves in the world. These caves, relatively rare worldwide, were formed when molten lava of a specific type and viscosity flowed down a slope at a specific angle. The surface layer cooled and solidified, but the lower part, still molten, continued to flow downward. At some point farther up the hillside, a collapse of the surface crust occurred, allowing air to enter, and the tube evacuated itself just below the surface.

• Spend the afternoon and evening down in the caves, looking at some of the fascinating formations found within - sinkholes, lava ropes, stalagmites and stalactites, benches, and of course, the secondary water-formed features.

• After breakfast, depart early by road to the top of Chyulu Hills.

• The area is excellent walking country, with gently undulating grasslands interspersed with dense forest patches.

• There is a possibility of viewing herds of eland, antelope, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest, with a slightly lesser chance of seeing elephant, lion, buffalo, and other game that live in the area. There are also probable views of Kilimanjaro, just 50 km away.

• The night will be spent along the crest, where it is likely to be cool and windy, with low clouds in the early morning. Therefore, a warm sleeping bag comes in handy.

• Enjoy a full day of guided walks with an experienced English-speaking guide.

All meals and overnight at the camp.

• Enjoy an early morning game drive or short walk before a late breakfast or early lunch.

• Drive along the crest road and down the western side of the hills for the journey back to Nairobi, or connect with the train to Mombasa, arriving in the late afternoon.
