Hike Through Yangmingshan's Volcanic Landscapes
The incredible Yangmingshan National Park lies within Taipei city limits and takes only an hour to reach by public transportation.
Hike to the first stop at Qingtiangang, a lava terrace formed when lava from Mt. Zhugao (竹篙山) flowed north after its eruption. The area was once used as pasture for grazing cattle during the Japanese colonial period, and today you can still find a few cattle chewing grass on the massive green grassland.
Head to Xiaoyoukeng by shuttle bus. Situated about 805 meters above sea level, this is one of the best places to feel post-volcanic activity under your feet.
Stop for photos, take in the smell of sulfur, and see fumaroles, sulfur crystals, hot springs, and the spectacular landslide terrain in the region.
Enjoy views of the entire mountainous landscape nearby, including Taipei's highest peak, Mt. Cising (七星山).
