One of the famous trekking routes, Lemosho is known for its bewitching scenery and is preferred for being less crowded than Machame. Trekkers cross the entire Shira Plateau with amazing views before merging with the Machame Route at Shira 2 Camp. Experience the incomparable natural beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro on this 8-day trek, culminating at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Hike upwards on a very steep trail in the dark, reaching Stella Point (18,958 ft/5,745 m) after approximately 6 hours at dawn.

The itinerary

Day 01

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Forest Camp

  • Register at Londorossi Gate (7,740 ft/2,360 m), where the climb begins in the rain forest of the lower slopes. Along the way, you may encounter animals such as black and white colobus monkeys and several varieties of birds.

  • Hike to the edge of the forest at Mti Mkubwa (9,500 ft/2,895 m).

Day 02

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

  • After breakfast, leave Mti Mkubwa for a climb up onto the Shira Plateau and Shira 1 Camp (11,500 ft/3,505 m).

  • Come out of the rain forest and enter the heather climate zone. Enjoy the wonderful sunset from the mess tent with Mt. Meru in the distance.

Duration: 5-6 hrs.

Day 03

Across Shira Plateau to Moir Hut via Shira 2

  • After breakfast, continue across the Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp (12,500 ft/3,810 m). Here, you will have lunch before continuing upwards to Moir Hut (13,800 ft/4,200 m) for camp.

Duration: 6-7 hrs.

Day 04

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Valley Camp

  • After breakfast, leave Shira behind and head up towards Lava Tower (15,190 ft/4,630 m), where you will have lunch.

  • Descend into the Barranco Valley (13,045 ft/3,976 m) for camp. Enjoy the amazing sunset on Kibo and the Great Barranco Wall.

Duration: 5-6 hrs.

Day 05

Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

  • After breakfast, leave Barranco Camp and scramble up the spectacular Barranco Wall. Once over the wall, it is an undulating walk to Karanga Camp (13,100 ft/3,995 m).

  • Enjoy the views of Kibo above and the plains below; you can see Moshi Town far below.

Duration: 4-5 hrs.

Day 06

Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Base Camp

  • After breakfast, head upwards towards the final camp at Barafu (15,330 ft/4,673 m). This day is steep but short, and you will have a hot lunch.

  • Enjoy the short day, as you will wake around 11 pm to leave for the summit. Mawenzi dominates the view from Barafu.

Duration: 4 hrs.

Day 07

Summit Attempt to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

  • Wake at 11 pm to get ready for the summit attempt.

  • Hike upwards on a very steep trail in the dark, reaching Stella Point (18,958 ft/5,745 m) after approximately 6 hours at dawn. Continue on the more gradual incline to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft/5,895 m), 1 hour from Stella Point.

  • After pictures and congratulations, head back down to Barafu for 2-3 hours of rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft/3,068 m).

Duration: 13-14 hrs.

Day 08

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Head from Mweka Camp down through the forest to Mweka Gate (5,380 ft/1,640 m) for certificates.

Duration: 2-3 hrs.
