The itinerary

1
Day 01

Machame Gate to Machame Camp through the Rainforest

  • Your guide will pick you up from the hotel at 09:00 after breakfast and take you to Machame Gate, where you will complete registration and meet your porters and cook. From here, you will begin hiking through the dense rainforest, enjoying views of different flora and fauna along the way.

  • Halfway through the route, you will stop for lunch before continuing to Machame Camp, where the crew will already have set up camp.

  • At the camp, you will sign in, wait for dinner, and then settle in for the night.

2
Day 02

Machame Camp to Shira Camp with Views of Kibo and Mount Meru

  • This is the shortest day of the trek, but it is also a steeper one. After breakfast, you will begin the second day's hike, trekking several uphill sections with viewpoints overlooking the plains and forests below, Kibo Peak, and Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania.

  • As you gain altitude, you will notice changes in the vegetation as the trees diminish in size, giving way to Kilimanjaro's famous high-altitude plants, Scenecio Kilimanjaro and Lobelia deckenii.

  • You will have a hot lunch at the camp or a lunch box on the way. The trek takes only three hours, depending on fitness levels and the day's weather.

  • There will be time to acclimatise before returning to Shira Camp, where you will have dinner and relax for the rest of the day.

3
Day 03

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

  • In the morning, have breakfast and begin hiking. This is considered an acclimatisation day, as you will hike up to Lava Tower at 14,000 ft / 4,640 m before descending to Barranco Camp at 12,960 ft / 3,950 m, where you will camp and spend the night.

  • At Barranco Camp, enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Moshi town, depending on the day's weather.

4
Day 04

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga Valley

  • Wake up early in the morning, have breakfast, and begin hiking across the Barranco Wall. This section takes about 45 minutes to one hour. At the top of the Barranco Wall, you may get a nice view of the mountain and have time to take more pictures.

  • Continue to Karanga Camp, where you will have a hot lunch, and then proceed to the base camp at Barafu Camp, the last camp before the summit.

  • Here, you will have an early dinner so you have time to prepare for the midnight hike.

5
Day 05

Midnight Ascent to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak

  • Wake up at 11:30 p.m. and have some light food before starting the hike to the summit.

  • You should begin at 12:00 a.m., and it will take about 5 hours to reach Stella Point at 14,000 ft / 5,730 m, located on the rim of the crater.

  • From Stella Point to Uhuru Peak, the highest peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, it will take about one more hour of hiking along the crater rim. You will reach the summit at sunrise, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., with time to enjoy the moment and take pictures.

  • Afterwards, descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch, pack up, and continue down to Mweka Camp, where you will have dinner and rest.

6
Day 06

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate through the Rainforest

  • After your overnight stay at Mweka Camp, you will descend to Mweka Gate through the rainforest. Watch your steps, as the trail can be slippery.

  • Our vehicles will be waiting at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to the hotel, where you can enjoy a hot shower and spend a little time with your crew and guides.

Know before you go

  • January and February are the warmest, April and May are the wettest, June and July are the coolest, and August and September are the driest. Therefore, the best time to climb Kilimanjaro tends to be during the warmest and driest months. It is possible to climb Kilimanjaro year-round; however, it is best to climb when there is a lower possibility of precipitation. The dry seasons are from the beginning of December through the beginning of March and then from late June through the end of October. These are considered the best times to climb in terms of weather.
