The itinerary

Day 01

Airport Arrival and Transfer to Arusha or Moshi

  • Meet and greet at the airport.
  • Transfer to your lodge or hotel in Arusha or Moshi town.

Day 02

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • Transfer from your hotel in Moshi to Machame Gate, where you will be introduced to your guide and porters.

  • Once registration is complete, begin the climb with a picnic lunch through rainforest areas for approximately 4 to 5 hours, arriving at Machame Huts.

  • Later in the afternoon, walk to a slightly higher altitude for acclimatisation.

Return to Machame Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 03

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • After breakfast, begin climbing through the short savannah forest and other vegetation for approximately 4 to 5 hours.

  • After a picnic lunch en route, arrive at Shira Camp before the afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 04

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

  • After breakfast, take a slow walk through semi-glacier and sandy areas, with a picnic lunch, for 3 to 4 hours.

  • Arrive at Barranco Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 05

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

  • After breakfast, climb through glaciers, with a picnic lunch, for approximately 4 to 5 hours.

  • Arrive at Barafu Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 06

Summit Ascent to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak

  • Wake up early at around 01:00 for preparation and a light breakfast before starting the final ascent to the summit. Reach Stella Point in approximately 5 to 6 hours, followed by a further ascent of about 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak.
  • After a short rest at Barafu Hut, descend via Gilman's Point down to Mweka Hut for an hour's rest and breakfast.
  • Continue descending for dinner and an overnight stay at Mweka Camp.

Day 07

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi

  • After breakfast, make the final descent to Mweka Gate. There, say goodbye to your guide and porters before connecting to private transfers to Moshi town for an overnight stay at a hotel on a bed-and-breakfast basis.

Day 08

Final Departure Transfer

  • Transfer to the bus stand, shuttle terminal, or airport.

  • Mountain Clothing:
    • Warm, windproof jacket with hood
    • Waterproof jacket and overtrousers
    • Walking trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and pullovers
    • Warm underwear and good, comfortable walking boots
    • Training shoes for the evening
    • Gaiters
    • Sun hat
    • Warm hat or balaclava
    • Scarf
  • Mountain Equipment:
    • Good warm sleeping bag
    • Water bottle (1 to 2 litres)
    • Water purification tablets or solution, and a filter
    • Wash kit and towel, toilet paper
    • First aid kit, including blister plasters, headache tablets, and suncream
    • Personal medication
    • Torch, sunglasses, and walking poles

Know before you go

  • Passenger Information:
    • Passengers should bring only duffle bags for safaris, not suitcases.
    • All passengers must carry an identification card or passport for internal flights.
    • Baggage on domestic flights is strictly limited to 15 kg per person, including hand luggage. Any excess baggage will be charged by the airline at check-in.
    • Passengers arriving in Tanzania may be asked to present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
    • A tourist visa can be obtained at the entry points, but it is advisable to double-check before travelling to Tanzania.
