Know before you go

Sultan Royal Palace, or Kraton, is the site where the Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family lived. It is located at the center of the axes stretching from north to south and east to west. Built in 1755, it is crowned by a row of mountains called the "Horizon," or "the border of the universe."
Water Castle, or Taman Sari, means "fragrant garden" and is named for the delicious fragrance emanating from 18 lavish gardens planted with flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees that were once part of the compound. It was nicknamed the "Water Castle" by the Dutch because of its imposing two-story mansion of Portuguese-Javanese design, now in ruins. It was built by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, beginning in 1758 and completed in 1765.
Prambanan Temple is the biggest and most beautiful Hindu temple, about 20 minutes from the airport. This magnificent Shivaite temple derives its name from the village where it is located. Locally, it is known as the Roro Jonggrang Temple, or the temple of the "slender virgin." The temple is believed to have been built in the middle of the ninth century.
