Day 01

Arrival in Monrovia

  • Airport pickup and transfer to your homestay or hotel accommodation, as agreed upon.

  • Depending on your arrival time, it can be decided whether there is any time left to visit the city.

Overnight at the hotel.

2
Day 02

Robertsport Coastal Escape

  • After breakfast, make the three-hour drive to Robertsport, famous for its surf conditions and offering beautiful beaches, hiking, and historical importance.

  • Many of the first US settlers, including the first President of Liberia, arrived via this port. The area is now scattered with large plantation-style Victorian homes similar to those of Virginia.

  • Enjoy a bonfire and barbecue night with fresh local fish and seafood, if available.

Overnight at Nana's Lodge in Robertsport.

3
Day 03

Robertsport Activities and Return to Monrovia

  • This morning, there are several activities on offer in Robertsport, including rainforest hiking in search of wildlife and birds, swimming off the beach, visiting nearby Messima village, or surfing.

  • In the late afternoon, return to Monrovia.

Overnight at the Mamba Point Hotel in Monrovia.

4
Day 04

Monrovia Tour and Kpatawee Waterfall

  • Start the day with a tour of Monrovia before continuing into the countryside, with a stop for lunch at Wulki Farms, the largest livestock and vegetable farm in Liberia.

  • Later, pass rainforest and tiny villages en route to visit Kpatawee Waterfall, located about an hour outside Gbarnga. Covered by a lush canopy, this tumbling waterfall and large natural swimming pool offer a great way to relax and enjoy Liberia's natural wonders.

  • Also, take a hike through the rainforest to see Kpatawee's twin falls.

Overnight at a guesthouse in Gbarnga.

5
Day 05

Mount Nimba and Sanniquellie

  • Drive to the top of Mount Nimba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in about 3 hours, and visit East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR), located in the north of the country and covering 13,569 biodiverse hectares.

  • The reserve borders both Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea and covers much of Liberia's share of the Mount Nimba mountain range. This extremely geographically unique area is home to more than 200 endemic species. ENNR also shelters endangered species, including the Nimba toad and the West African chimpanzee. It was officially established as a reserve in 2003.

Overnight at a guesthouse in Sanniquellie.

6
Day 06

Wildlife and Birding in East Nimba Nature Reserve

  1. After an early breakfast, spend most of the day searching for wildlife and birds throughout the beautiful East Nimba Nature Reserve.

Overnight at a guesthouse in Sanniquellie.

7
Day 07

Libassa Ecolodge in Kpan's Town

  • Head to Libassa Ecolodge, located 30 minutes outside Monrovia in a stunning setting between a lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a family-owned business, and the founders built the lodge, made up of hand-built double cottages, over three years while working with the local community, whom they trained in carpentry and hospitality skills.

  • Either enjoy the natural surroundings around the palm-fringed beaches or keep watch for some of the exotic birds known to frequent the area.

Overnight at the Libassa Ecolodge in Kpan's Town.

8
Day 08

Firestone Plantation and Monkey Island

  • Today, visit Firestone, the world's largest rubber plantation and a part of Liberia since 1926. The plantation has been well maintained over the years and offers vast, beautiful views of elegant white rubber trees.

  • Your guides will teach you how the trees are tapped and how rubber is made. Then venture out to Monkey Island, located in Marshall, which is a sanctuary for chimpanzees that were once used as test animals at the local research institute. Pressure from advocacy groups to stop experiments on chimps, coupled with a lack of funding, resulted in the closure of such institutions and the need to find a home for these primates, who could not survive on their own in the wild. The chimps are fed daily by locals who use canoes to visit them from a safe distance.

  • Join the canoe ride to see these beautiful animals. In the afternoon, return to further explore the surrounding areas of the lodge, where several activity options are available.

Overnight at Libassa Ecolodge in Kpan's Town.

Know before you go

  • Before embarking:

    • Obtain your visa for travel to Ghana, Nigeria, and Liberia.
    • Receive the required yellow fever vaccination and bring proof of vaccination.
    • Purchase travel insurance with your desired coverage.
    • Review our Rules for Visitors for important tips on the best ways to interact with locals.
  • Arrival at any of the designated international airports (Murtala Morhameed International Airport/Kotoka International Airport/Robertsport Airport):

    • Your vaccination card will be examined upon arrival.
    • If you do not have a current yellow fever vaccination, you will be detained.
    • Queue at immigration to have your passport with an entry visa examined.
    • Queue at the baggage claim carousel. Wheel carts are free, but baggage handlers who assist you will expect a tip.
    • Exit the baggage claim area and proceed down the ramp.
    • Queue at the customs checkpoint to have your luggage examined.
    • Have your baggage claim tags confirmed.
    • Exit the airport arrivals hall. The total time elapsed after your flight lands can be up to 90 minutes.
  • For Accra airport pickups, your guide will be waiting for you outside the airport as you exit the arrivals hall. He or she will be easy to spot in our private tour guide outfit, holding a sign with your name on it.

  • There is an ATM and a foreign exchange booth beside the baggage claim area and outside the arrivals hall. It can be a good idea to obtain enough cash to get through a couple of days while you are waiting for your luggage, especially if you are departing immediately or arriving on the weekend.

  • In-country travel:

    • During your time traveling together, your guide is available 24 hours a day. However, due to the increase in road accidents after dark, we generally do not drive outside urban areas after sunset, which occurs at 6:00 PM every night here on the equator.
    • Because your adventure never stops, your guide is always on call. Let your guide know if there is anything you need. Do not hesitate to be direct, but always be polite. Your guide is attentive, so you may need to let them know when you would like some time alone.
  • Money:

    • Notify the issuers of any debit or credit card that you plan to use in Ghana, Nigeria, or Liberia. If they are not aware that you have traveled, their fraud detection software may decline any requests for money from within your country of visit. Call the phone number on the back of the card and let them know you will be traveling to Africa. They can also inform you of any charges associated with withdrawing cash in cedis.
  • Tipping:

    • Regarding guide tipping, as in all other areas of the hospitality industry, tips are a major part of service employees' income. Tips are performance-based and should be provided in exchange for excellent service. Somewhere in the range of $10-$20 per day will make them happy, or for groups, a minimum of $3 per person per day. These tips should be collected by someone on behalf of your group at the end and given to the guide, who will share them with any other tour staff.
    • If meals are included in your tour, then tips for your servers are also included. Of course, if anyone is exceptional or goes beyond expectations to make a favorable impression, it is acceptable to provide an additional tip or gift of some sort.
  • Departure:

    • Exchange or donate your Ghana/Nigeria/Liberia currency.
    • Donate or leave behind any clothing or personal supplies that you can easily replace. Every bit helps here!
    • Pack well for the trip home. Your bags will be weighed and inspected at the airport check-in. Be informed about what you may legally bring into your home country.
  • Private tour planning is easy with me.
