Day 02

Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan, and Nagarkot

  • After breakfast, drive to Bhaktapur, 16 km east of Kathmandu, via Bhaktapur Road and Nagarkot Highway (30 minutes). Bhaktapur is a medieval city and a cultural gem of Nepal. It is the largest of the three ancient Newar kingdoms found in the Kathmandu Valley and is particularly known for its arts, culture, and the traditional lifestyles of its people.

  • Visit Bhaktapur Durbar Square and witness the magnificent 55-Window Palace, which is surrounded by a number of pagoda and shikhara-style temples. See the metal art and architecture of the Golden Gate, the five-storied pagoda-style Nyatapola Temple with its wooden carvings, Bhairabnath Temple in Taumadhi Square, and the Duttatraya Temple, dedicated to the combination of three gods - Brahma, Visnu, and Mahesh or Shiva.

  • The Bhaktapur tour takes about 2-3 hours, followed by a 30-minute drive to Changu Narayan via Nagarkot Road. Changu Narayan Temple has a history that dates back around 3,000 years. Located on a high hilltop, the temple is surrounded by forest with Champak trees and a small village, and stands majestically over the rice fields of Bhaktapur, around 22 km away from Kathmandu. The temple of Changu Narayan, a living museum of wooden, metal, and stone carvings, was originally built in the 4th century during the Lichhavi Dynasty. It is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites. There is also an option for a 2-hour hike up to Telkot, if interested.

  • Then drive to Nagarkot for sunset and sunrise views. Nagarkot is one of the popular viewpoints for spectacular mountain scenery, including Mt. Everest and Langtang.

  • Also visit the view tower, if interested.

Overnight at a hotel in Nagarkot.

  • Walk north of Kathmandu Durbar Square to Asan and Indrachowk. Here, see a traditional open market and traditional houses from the 17th century that have remained unchanged.

  • Then drive 4 km west of Thamel to Swayambhunath, one of the oldest stupas, also known as the Monkey Temple because of the large number of monkeys surrounding the stupa. This place is equally popular among Buddhists and Hindus.
