The itinerary

Day 01

Cape Town to Oudtshoorn via Paarl and Route 62

  • You will be picked up by our guide in Cape Town and begin driving towards Paarl, a city famous for its wine industry, where you will see the Paarl granite rock. Continue to the famous Huguenot toll tunnel near Worcester, a town founded in 1820. Worcester boasts neo-classical influences and is now an important training centre for disabled people.

  • Next, travel to Robertson, a town known for ostrich farming, viticulture, and fruit production. Here, you can see Victorian-style museums, historic buildings, and a pink church.

  • Proceed to Montagu to see the radioactive hot springs and the beautiful folded mountains. After this, enter the semi-desert Karoo region, known for its succulents, fossils, and mountain leopards.

  • Your next stop is Barrydale, located on the boundary of the Overberg and Klein Karoo. This charming town offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, where you can relax and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

  • In the early afternoon, travel towards Oudtshoorn on Route 62 via Ladismith and Calitzdorp. Surrounded by stunning scenery, you will pass through the quiet little town of Calitzdorp, known as the port wine capital of South Africa.

  • Upon arrival in Oudtshoorn, visit an ostrich farm to learn how these flightless birds brought fame and wealth to the town, which has been referred to as the ostrich capital of the world since its founding in 1847. You can also view the famous opulent feather palaces, the houses that belonged to the first ostrich breeders who made their fortune from ostrich feathers. These birds are also raised for their meat, eggs, feathers, and leather.

  • Arrive at your guesthouse for a well-deserved break, followed by dinner. You can try ostrich steak at one of the local restaurants.

Day 02

Cango Caves, Outeniqua Pass, and Knysna Lagoon

  • In the morning, gear up for a visit to the Cango Caves, a series of underground tunnels and galleries with impressive limestone formations.

  • Next, take the road over the famous "Outeniqua Pass", which leads you to the Garden Route and welcomes you to Knysna.

  • Arriving on the shores of the Indian Ocean, visit Victoria Bay, a small sandy cove framed by high cliffs and usually known as a surfer's paradise.

  • Have lunch while sitting on top of the rocks. Then, go for a relaxing sunset cruise on the Knysna lagoon, followed by a short leisure walk and dinner at a Waterfront restaurant. You can taste some delicious oysters here.

Overnight at a luxurious Airbnb.

Day 03

Tsitsikamma National Park and Plettenberg Bay

  • Before leaving the Knysna lagoon area, admire the view of the Heads, formed by two cliffs creating a narrow passage at the entrance of the lagoon.

  • Next, head to Nature's Valley, a haven among the forest with beautiful beaches. This area is one of South Africa's best-kept secrets, boasting exceptional hiking trails and superb coastal scenery.

  • Continue to Tsitsikamma National Park for a walk among huge Yellowwood trees and cross the Storms River mouth via a suspension bridge to enjoy the beautiful scenery around you. Enjoy a local lunch overlooking the mighty Indian Ocean.

  • On your way back, you can also stop at the famous Bloukrans Bridge, home to the world's highest bungee jump. If interested, you can do bungee jumping here.

  • The next stop is Plettenberg Bay, a small chic tourist town with lagoons and great beaches for surfing, diving, and marine mammal boat cruises.

  • Return to Knysna for dinner at a restaurant of your choice and an overnight stay.

4
Day 04

Mossel Bay Caves and Private Game Reserve Safari

  • After breakfast, take the road to Mossel Bay, the Bay of Mussels, and explore caves where the Xhoisan (Strandloper) sheltered in these middens and lived almost uniquely on the abundant marine life along the coast.

  • Visit the Bartolomeu Diaz Museum complex, followed by lunch and a private game reserve safari in a 4x4 vehicle with a professional ranger guide.

Enjoy a delicious African buffet and stay the night at a lodge.

5
Day 05

Sunrise Safari, Hermanus Whales, and Betty's Bay Penguins

  • Start your day early with a 3-hour sunrise safari, followed by breakfast.

  • After breakfast, head back to Cape Town via Hermanus and Betty's Bay. You will have lunch in Hermanus, a charming resort in Walker Bay, where you can view the whales that breed every year and come close to shore during the austral winter. It is also recommended that you take a cruise in the bay to observe these magnificent giants more closely.

  • Continue to Stoney Point in Betty's Bay, home to Africa's larger and lesser-known penguin colony.

  • Finally, the last stretch of your journey is via Clarence Drive, a spectacularly scenic route climbing around cliffs and hugging the wild turquoise Cape coastline, where the sea is treacherous but perfect for an ocean sunset.
