Sign up for an adventurous tour into the heart of Madidi National Park, following the old Inca trails from La Paz to the Tuichi River. Travel across the Altiplano plateau past Lake Titicaca and the Apolobamba mountain range to Pelechuco, where your trek begins. Hike for seven days through alpine terrain, forest, and thick cloud forest to reach the river. Then raft through pristine, wildlife-rich rainforest waters and camp on the riverbanks before returning via Rurrenabaque to La Paz.

The itinerary

Day 01

From La Paz to Pelechuco via the Altiplano

  • Leave early in the morning for Apolobamba. Drive through the scenic Altiplano plateau and pass by Lake Titicaca.
  • Continue past the Área Protegida Apolobamba and the Reserva Nacional de Fauna Ulla-Ulla.
  • Cross a pass just after Lake Cololo (4700 m) before arriving in the colonial village of Pelechuco, where the primary source of livelihood is gold mining.
  • Spend the night in Pelechuco.

Day 02

Descend from Paso de Sanches onto the Inca trail

  • Drive to Paso de Sanches, a mountain pass at 4840 m.
  • Once at the pass, make your way down to where you meet the mules.
  • Begin walking down the valley, following the old Inca trail.
  • Pass through the alpine landscape before entering the forest.
  • Camp near a small river for an overnight stay.

Day 03

Trek deeper into the forest on the Inca trail

  • Start trekking in the forest. There are a few long climbs, and you need to stay above the river. The trail here has good stone paving and is an excellent example of the solid roads for which the Incas were renowned.
  • Overnight camping in the forest.

Day 04

Inca trail walk with views of Chuapi Orco

  • Follow the winding Inca trail and continue walking.
  • See beautiful views of Chuapi Orco (6044 m), the highest peak in the Apolobamba mountain range.
  • Camp near an old Inca Tambo (road-house), structures used to host Inca dignitaries and officials on business.

Day 05

Cloud forest trek and wildlife spotting

  • Walk in the cloud forest, a dense mass of trees and thick vegetation, where you can spot the Andean Spectacle bear. The trail continues along the top of a ridge and is quite steep in places.
  • Camp in a forest clearing.

Day 06

Continue to Mojos village

  • Continue along the forested ridge, passing through occasional clearings among the trees. Here, the trail gets muddy in places, and the mules find it hard going.
  • Then cross a small bridge and pass by pineapple plantations on the way to the village of Mojos.
  • Camp in the village for an overnight stay.

Day 07

Easy trail through the forest

  • After changing the mule, continue walking on an easy trail that is used more regularly.
  • Camp in a forest clearing for an overnight stay.

Day 08

Trek to Virgen Del Rosario and meet the rafting team

  • Climb up to a great viewpoint to see the Rio Tuichi.
  • After another hour of trekking, reach the community of Virgen Del Rosario.
  • Upon arrival, meet the guides for the rafting section.
  • Overnight camping in the community.

Day 09

Raft to Asariamas through Madidi National Park

  • Get ready for a full day of fun-filled rafting. Raft downriver through the pristine and wildlife-rich Madidi National Park.
  • You have the option of ending your tour here by heading back to La Paz, or staying for another 5 days of rafting on the Rio Tuichi. (Included in package)

Day 10

Begin the multi-day Rio Tuichi rafting expedition

  • Continue rafting on the Rio Tuichi for the next five days.
  • Raft downriver through the pristine and wildlife-rich rainforest, making occasional side hikes into the jungle or to swimming holes.
  • Catch fish in the river and camp on the riverbanks.
  • During the five days on the river, have the opportunity to see an incredible variety of plant life and wildlife.

Day 11

Raft through rainforest with jungle side hikes

Same as day ten.

  • Raft downriver through the pristine and wildlife-rich rainforest, making occasional side hikes into the jungle or to swimming holes.
  • Catch fish in the river and camp on the riverbanks.
  • See an incredible variety of plant life and wildlife.

Day 12

Continue rafting and riverside camping

Final full rafting day on the Rio Tuichi

Motorboat transfer to Rurrenabaque

  • Get into a motorboat and head to Rurrenabaque.
  • Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 15

Flight back to La Paz and departure

  • Take a flight back to La Paz.
