Go on a 4-day trek to climb Illimani, the highest and southernmost peak in the Cordillera Real. Starting from La Paz, take in views of Illimani, an imposing sight that, according to local legend, is the Queen or Mother of the mountain range. Follow rocky paths to Puente Roto Base Camp and Nido del Cóndor High Camp before making your summit attempt.

At the top, enjoy a bird's-eye view of La Paz and El Alto, with the city lights at night.

The itinerary

1
Day 01

La Paz to Pinaya and Puente Roto Base Camp

La Paz (3600m) - Pinaya (3900m) - Puente Roto Base Camp (4500m)

  • Drive through the Cordillera, passing lots of small villages and some cactus-filled valleys. Continue through Palca Canyon and stop for a short visit.

  • After 3 to 4 hours of driving, arrive at the village of Pinaya and have a picnic lunch before the walk up to base camp.

Day 1 consists of 3-4 hours of driving, 2-3 hours of walking, and camping (LD).

Day 02

Puente Roto to Nido del Cóndor High Camp

Puente Roto - Nido del Cóndor High Camp (5400m)

  • Climb through scree and rocks to reach the high camp. The porters will carry all the equipment and personal gear. It is a long climb for the day, with over 1000m of ascent.

  • At the top, enjoy a bird's-eye view of La Paz and El Alto, with the city lights at night.

Day 2 consists of 6-8 hours of hiking and camping (BLD).

Day 03

High Camp to the Summit of Illimani and Back to Base Camp

High Camp - Summit (6439m) - High Camp - Base Camp

  • Start early in the morning for the climb to the summit; it will be cold.

  • Get roped up and put on the crampons.

  • Climb along icy and snowy ridges, with nothing steeper than 50°.

  • Continue along the last short snowy ridge and reach the summit.

  • Rest and take photos before beginning the descent.

  • Return to the high camp, where the porters will meet you and take all the equipment and personal gear back to base camp.

Day 3 consists of 12-15 hours of climbing and hiking, with camping (BLD).

Day 04

Base Camp to Pinaya and Return to La Paz

  • Return the same way, walking down to Pinaya to meet the transport back to La Paz.

  • Drop-off at the hotel.

Day 4 consists of 1-2 hours of walking and 3 hours of driving (BL).

Know before you go

  • Illimani has five peaks in total; three of them are over 6,000m.

  • It is a fairly demanding climb, but well worth the effort for the views of La Paz and the Cordillera Real, and for the chance to summit Bolivia's second-highest peak.

  • Type of activity: technical climbing with ropes, trekking up to high camp (5400m).

  • Difficulty: 3 - moderate fitness.

  • Experience required: 2-3 - basic climbing skills / some experience.

  • Grade of climb: Normal route II/PD 50°.

  • Number of days: 4 days, 3 nights.

  • Tour starts in La Paz.

  • Tour ends in La Paz.

  • Best time of year: May to September.

  • Season: dry season; days are mild and nights are cold.
