Trek to Laguna Ahuac, also known as Aguak, a natural freshwater reservoir within Huascarán National Park in the Cordillera Blanca, on the eastern side of the Callejón de Huaylas in the province of Huaraz, Áncash, Peru. Its clean, crystalline waters reflect a striking blue like a mirror, rewarding you after a 4-hour walk. Along the way and at the lagoon, enjoy spectacular views over Huaraz, the Cordillera Blanca, the Callejón de Huaylas, and the Cordillera Negra.

The itinerary

Day 01

Hike to Laguna Ahuac and Visit Museo de Sitio Wari

  • Take a vehicle to the small village and archaeological site of Willcahuain, where your hike begins.

  • Follow a marked trail to the hill of San Cristobal and then continue towards the lagoon.

  • During the hike, admire the beautiful mountains surrounding you, the moraines formed by the glacier, and the snow-capped peaks of Vallunaraju, Churup, Huamashraju, and Cashan, along with a stunning view over Huaraz.

  • After returning, visit the Museo de Sitio Wari, the museum and archaeological site of the Wari culture.
