Day 01

Arrival and Hotel Check-in in Moshi

  • Arrive in Moshi and check in to the hotel.

Day 02

Drive to Machame Gate and Trek Through Montane Forest

  • From Moshi, you will be driven to Machame Gate via the route often called the "Whiskey Route."
  • From the Machame Park Gate, begin the gentle climb through the original montane forest, carpeted with unique flowers and ferns.
  • The first camp is at 3,000 meters, after a climb of 1,200 meters and 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Day 03

Hike Across Moorland to Shira Camp

  • After emerging from the heather zone, hike through the open moorland to the camp near the Shira Caves at 3,840 meters, and watch out for fascinating geological features in the old volcanic caldera, which can be viewed during a half-hour optional walk in the afternoon.
  • Continue the climb for another 840 meters, with around 4 to 5 hours of walking.

Day 04

Climb Towards Kibo and Descend to Barranco Valley

  • From Shira Cave Camp, climb towards Peak Kibo and enjoy the western glaciers, clearly visible across the rugged high-altitude desert of volcanic rocks and boulders.
  • Descend into the sheltered Barranco Valley for the mid-way camp at 3,950 meters. The climb takes around 6 to 7 hours.

Day 05

Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, and Barafu Hut

  • Climb up the steep Barranco Wall, where some sections are much easier than they first appear.
  • Descend to the Karanga Valley, where you will take a break for lunch.
  • After lunch, continue the hike to Barafu Hut at 4,600 meters. Once there, enjoy the fantastic views of Mawenzi Peak from the camp.
  • Relax for the remaining part of the day.

Day 06

Summit Ascent to Kibo Point via Stella Point

  • Brace yourself for a climb through steep frozen terrain via Gillman's Point, and reach Stella Point on the crater rim to catch the stunning sunrise views.
  • After another 40 minutes, you will arrive at the highest point on the continent, Kibo Point at 5,900 meters, which is usually warm in the sunshine.
  • Begin the descent via the Mweka route, including an ascent of 1,300 meters and about a 7-hour trek to the summit, followed by a descent of 2,600 meters and a 6 to 7-hour trek to the Mweka campsite above Mweka Gate.

Day 07

Forest Descent to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi

  • From Mweka campsite, descend through the forest to Mweka Gate, depending on individual fitness, and collect your certificates.
  • Board the vehicle that will take you back to your hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay.
