Addis Ababa Museums, Cathedrals and Entoto Churches

  • Start the tour by visiting the National Museum, home to Lucy (Dinqnesh), probably the most famous hominid skeleton in the world. At over three million years old, she is one of the oldest hominids yet discovered.

  • Discover an interesting collection of archaeology and artefacts from Ethiopian history, arts, and cultures in this museum.

  • Explore the magnificent Ethnographic Museum, operated by the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University.

  • Marvel at Ethiopia's first and only ethnological museum, exhibiting the physical environment and traditional artefacts of all the major ethnic groups, including costumes, jewellery, traditional household goods, farming implements, military and hunting weapons, art, musical instruments, and both Christian and Islamic parchment manuscripts and icons.

  • Head to Africa Hall, built and donated by the Ethiopian government, where the Organization of African Unity was founded in 1963. It is now the headquarters of one of the UN's six regional commissions and was established in 1958.

  • Proceed to Trinity Cathedral, the most ornate example of a modern urban cathedral. Built in 1941, it was dedicated to and remains the special final resting place of the nation's heroes and distinguished civil servants.

  • Trace the paintings on the ceiling by one of the country's major modern living artists, Ale Felege Selam, who was also the founder of the Arts School.

  • Explore Merkato, Addis Ababa's commercial centre and the dynamo of the country's development in trade and industry, as well as its real link to the world's business and industry.

  • Visit Entoto, Mariam and Raguel (Elias) Churches in the extensive mountain range of Entoto, north of the city. This was the original site of Menelik's capital before he moved down to establish present-day Addis Ababa.
