Budapest Historic Café Walking Tour
Start at Vörösmarty tér, in the heart of the city. Visit Café Gerbeaud, which still stands proudly after more than 150 years. This traditional coffeehouse began in 1858, and today it remains one of the greatest coffeehouses in Europe.
From Café Gerbeaud, take a tram ride near the Danube to Café Central. This Vienna-style café-restaurant has been an open space for writers, musicians, artists, journalists, and poets since 1897. Enjoy the architectural styles of the interiors and taste the delicious Esterházy cake and other desserts.
Continue to the Museum Café, which has been in operation since 1885. Its prominent clientele once included many Members of Parliament, distinguished writers, and famous Hungarian actors. The lavish walls are covered with tiles featuring the world-famous Zsolnay porcelain works. Be sure to look out for the grand 19th-century Venetian mirror here.
After another short walk, enter the Urania Cafe to admire a mix of Arabic and Moorish architectural styles. This building also houses one of the oldest film theatres in the city.
Next, walk towards Blaha Lujza tér on the grand boulevard to reach your next stop, the elegant New York Cafe. It is considered one of the most beautiful cafe houses in the world.
The walking tour ends at Művész (Art) Cafe on Andrássy Boulevard, opposite the Opera House. Here, you may spot celebrity actors and actresses who regularly visit from the nearby Budapest Broadway.
