Day 01

Choose Your Xinjiang Day Trip from Urumqi

Option 1: Tianshan Heavenly Lake

Depart early from Urumqi and take the shuttle bus up the winding mountain road to Tianshan Heavenly Lake.
Visit the main lake of Heavenly Lake and Dinghai Shenzhen, also known as the Stabilising the Sea Tree.
Stroll along the Qianlongyuan Hidden Dragon Abyss Trail and view the Feilongtan Flying Dragon Pool Waterfall.
Take the Mayashan Cable Car for a panoramic view from above before returning to the city.

Option 2: Turpan

Depart from Urumqi and travel approximately 3 hours by car to Turpan.
Arrive at Tuyugou Mazha Village, an ancient Uyghur village with a history of over 1,000 years.
Head to the Flaming Mountains Scenic Area to experience the iconic scorching landscape.
In the evening, watch the desert sunset at the Kumtag Desert before returning to Urumqi.

Option 3: Nanshan Pasture

Depart from Urumqi and arrive at the Sky Prairie, the filming location of the popular television show Dad, Where Are We Going?
Enjoy a Kazakh family visit, taste milky tea, and try on traditional ethnic costumes.

Know before you go

Xinjiang is a multi-ethnic region home mainly to Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Hui people, most of whom follow Islam, and their customs and religious beliefs must be respected at all times.
Do not bring or mention pork products in Muslim restaurants, and do not order any dish containing pork.
When entering a mosque or other religious place, remove your shoes, remain quiet, and dress modestly without short skirts or shorts.
Do not photograph worshippers during prayer without permission.
When accepting tea or food from a Kazakh or Uyghur host, use your right hand, and do not point at people or make rude gestures toward elders.
Always ask for permission before photographing local residents, herders, or children, and never take pictures secretly or by force.
Although Xinjiang uses Beijing Time at UTC+8, its natural geographical location corresponds to UTC+6, creating a two-hour time difference.
In summer, sunrise is around 6:30 AM and sunset around 10:00 PM, with office hours generally from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Lunch rush at restaurants is around 2:00 PM, and dinner runs from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
When you first arrive, arrange activities according to local time and do not force yourself to follow your usual sleep schedule.
When booking a private car, guide, or tickets, always confirm whether the time stated is Beijing Time or Xinjiang Time.
Carry your original ID card at all times, as it is required for entering shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, scenic areas, gas stations, and other public places.
Keep your ID card separate from your bank cards, and save an electronic scan or photo of it in case of loss.
Cooperate patiently with all security checks at train stations, airports, and highway checkpoints, and do not photograph security personnel.
At gas stations, all passengers except the driver must wait outside while the driver enters alone to swipe their ID card to refuel.
Most scenic areas in Xinjiang ban drones or require advance registration, so apply for a permit from the local public security bureau or scenic area management office before flying a drone.
Attractions in Xinjiang are very far apart, and covering 300 to 500 kilometres in a single day is normal, so prepare with a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, water, and snacks.
Use restroom facilities whenever available, as rest stops are far apart.
Speed limits are strictly enforced on national highways and mountain roads, and all traffic rules must be followed.
Fill up your fuel tank whenever you see a gas station, especially when driving the Duku Highway or desert highways, as stations are far apart.
When hiring a car, always choose a legitimate travel agency or platform, sign a contract, and confirm insurance coverage.
Urumqi has high-speed trains to Turpan, Hami, and Korla, but for areas such as Kanas and Ili, hiring a car or joining a tour group is recommended.
Temperatures can vary dramatically throughout the day, with mornings and evenings around 10°C and midday temperatures exceeding 30°C, so layered clothing is essential.
UV intensity is extremely high, and you can get sunburned within half an hour without protection, so use high-SPF sunscreen and drink plenty of water.
When visiting high-altitude areas such as the Pamir Plateau, Tashkurgan County, or the Karakoram Highway above 3,000 metres, avoid strenuous exercise and do not travel to high altitudes if you have a cold.
Drink 2 to 3 litres of water per day in Xinjiang's dry climate, and avoid overeating greasy roasted meats when you first arrive.
Download offline maps in advance, as 4G signal may be unavailable in mountains, deserts, and some grassland road sections, including parts of the Duku Highway and the Taklamakan Desert Highway.
Mandarin is generally understood in major cities and tourist areas, but a translation app with Uyghur language support is recommended for remote villages.
Bargaining is acceptable at the International Grand Bazaar and night markets when buying handicrafts or dried fruit, generally starting at half to two-thirds of the asking price.
Do not litter, drive across grasslands, or pick wild protected plants such as snow lotus or Cynomorium.
If visiting border areas such as Baihaba in Kanas, Tashkurgan County, Khorgos Port, or Kunjirap Port, obtain a Border Defence Permit in advance at your place of household registration or in Urumqi.
