Day 01

New Zealand Battlefield Tour in Messines, Passendale and Ypres

  • Start the tour around 09:00 am from the hotel.

  • Visit the New Zealand Memorial on the slopes of Messines, Belgium's smallest town.

  • Go to the visitor centre on the square, where the statue of the New Zealand Soldier stands. It was unveiled on ANZAC Day in 2015.

  • Visit the church and its crypt. Stand where Samuel Frickelton won his Victoria Cross for taking two machine gun positions.

  • Have lunch and go to 'Nine Elms' Cemetery near Poperinge to visit David Gallaher's grave, one of the 'All Blacks'.

  • Proceed to Zonnebeke and Passendale to visit the Tyne Cot Military Cemetery and Memorial. This is the CWGC's largest cemetery in Europe.

  • Go to Gravenstafel, where David Gallaher was killed during the Battle of Passendale, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres.

  • Drive towards Ypres and enjoy some free time before attending the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.

  • Return to the hotel.
