The journey
Take a 3-day trip to Virunga National Park from Kigali for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Spend active days in this remarkable region, with the chance to climb the active stratovolcano of Nyiragongo in the Virunga Mountains and enjoy dramatic views from its glowing crater rim. The journey also takes you across the Congo border and along the shores of Lake Kivu, adding a scenic touch to this unforgettable experience.

Day by day
Pick up from Kigali International Airport and begin your journey toward the Congo border.
Drive from Kigali toward the border crossing.
Arrive at the Grande Barriere border and cross directly into the DRC. The tourism office is conveniently located at the border on the Congo side.
After checking in, take a short walk or drive for about 2 minutes to Linda Hotel near the shores of Lake Kivu.
After breakfast, at around 8 am, drive toward Virunga National Park in the north of the city.
At the entrance of the park, Kibati Station is the starting point for the volcano hike.
Start ascending at 10 am with the rest of the climbing group.
Reach the summit at around 5 pm, when the crater starts glowing red.
Spend the whole evening near the crater rim before retiring to your shelter, located some 5 meters away.
Early in the morning, at around 6 am, start descending back to Kibati Station.
Once there, make a short comment about your experience and transfer back to the Rwanda border, passing by the shores of Lake Kivu for a short relaxation stop.
Drive back to Kigali, from where you can decide to fly back or stay for another night.
